You might need to update your Java component, which sounds like Sun's Java Runtime Engine. You also could uninstall Sun's and update the Microsoft Virtual Machine. if you already have an earlier version. Either one should be able to run most Java applets.

    Sun download: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
Scroll down to Download J2SE v 1.4.2_01 and click DOWNLOAD in the JRE column.

Microsoft: see INFO: Availability of Current Build of Microsoft VM (Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 163637)

Last but maybe not least, you can suppress debugging messages under Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Disable script debugging.

    Thanks jscher,
I did try to disable script debugging. The result was readable pages with a remark 'error on page' in the lower left corner, but also in not being able to continue on a link on the page.
I will look at the Java component update and see whether it helps.
I suppose it could also be the web page itself. I have tried with my bank, HSBC Hong Kong and this is what happened:
This is what happens when I go to www.hsbc.com.hk

First page opens fine, but with error on page
    Line 63
    Char 1
Error: 'return' statement outside of function

I then pres the link: Personal Services

Page opens fine and readable, but with error on page
    Line 47
    Char 1
Error: 'return' statement outside of function

    I select a card: Visa

This page opens fine and readable, but with error on page
    Line 19
    Char 31
Error: Can't execute code from a freed script

    Line 160
    Char 2
Error: "opener" is null or not an object

When I then try to open the link Rewards/Online Redemption I simply cannot. Nothing happens.

Could you do me a big favour to try the same to see whether it is my IE or in this case, the web page itself?

I'm not getting any errors at all, and I ask for them. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> *The last page (Rewards) is very slow to open.

Other than Internet Explorer, what other kinds of software are you running that could possibly "trash" scripts in web pages? Potential culprits include:

    (1) Malicious code checkers in antivirus or personal firewall products; and
    (2) Pop-up and other ad blockers

I just downloaded and installed J2SEv.1.4.2_01 and then received your reply. I can now do exactly the same as you i.e. access all pages on that address without getting one single error, <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> so it must have been my Java. I really hope this has solved all the problems. Thanks a lot.
I do by the way have quite a lot of security which could have been the culprit, I suppose. ZoneAlarm Pro, Norton Personal Firewall and Antivirus, AVG, Pestpatrol and for emails Mailwasher Pro and Benign. Maybe paranoid, but have never had a virus or been hacked.
    Thank you again jscher!
