Can .nk2 file be edited (Outlook 2002)

I have problems with Autocomplete of addresses - the addresses of deleted/past contacts keep appearing. Hitting the DEL button works for that session but they reappear in the next session. I have now found the .nk2 file and would like to edit it.

It is not a text file - loaded into Word and saw lots of funny characters. Is there any way to edit the file or is that not recommended?

If not how can I start a new .nk2 file? Renaming the file hid it from the system (no Autocomplete occured) but no new .nk2 was created despite forcing Autocomplete with Ctrl K.

NK2 cannot be edited; Microsoft has not yet released an editor.

Renaming the file means you need to rebuild it from scratch over time.

I'm not sure what Ctrl+K does.

Ctrl+K forces the completion of the address - it gives you all the compatible email addresses if there is more than one - try it!

Microsoft Knowledge Base (sorry threw away the reference) advises renaming the .nk2 file if it has got corrupted beyond repair, and then making the Outlook create a new one. This does not appear to work as no new file is created (should the .nk2 file be created at installation of Outlook?).

Only option was getting a smaller .nk2 file that was on the hard disc (do not know how that came about) and renaming it. This resulted in no autocompletion and now building the names to be autocompleted painfully from the beginning one at a time; preferable to having old email adresses popping up each time.

    Anybody faced this problem before?

It's been awhile since I checked, but Outlook waits till it closes to update a number of files and i think NK2 is one of them. Unfortuantely, once the NK2 is corrupt you'll need to start from scratch.

Hi guys, just reading this thread as I am trying to locate this file to delete it or void it etc. The reason being we hav had our email servers and address book changed - hence all the site email addresses are now different and the autocomplete has got the old ones there. People are using the email as usual but the emails are not going to the right people due to this - they are returned as unable to send !

I cant find this file on my PC and was wondering if they might be kept with our mailboxes on the server? Would anyone know?

I have done a search of my C drive with all options for viewing all files / folders etc and got nothing!
    Thanks,

    Radically new haircut, wow!

On my PC (Office XP on Windows XP), the .nk2 file is in

    Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftOutlook

Since Application Data is a hidden folder, you must display hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer to be able to find/see it., but you mention that you already do that.

Thanks Hans. Mine was there too - odd that it didnt come up in the search. Sometimes the MS Search seems a little quirky. I did have the options for hidden files etc...

By default it is a 'hidden' file, so if your computer is not displaying hidden files it does not show on the search
