    Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

    Hi All,

#1) For a little while, we have been getting error messages upon reboot. These come early in the boot cycle and appear as a DOS screen. Usually there are multiple, and identical messages that say something like "cannot update file %1 from %2". Then at the bottom it informs us that files were not updated correctly and windoze may not run or run correctly. In spite of these messages, things seemed to go along all right and since I REALLY hate messing with the OS, I let it go, plus, there was no indication of what the correct course of action might be.

#2) When the latest virus hit, my wife informed me she thought the computer was running very slow. I thought perhaps we were infected. I tried to update our virus scanner's pattern file, but was unsuccessful. As part of that effort, we were advised to go to MicroSoft's update center and update our critical files. Now I was desparate, so I did that. The MS site determined that I should update about 18 critical files. Being a fool, I said OK.

#3) As a result, our Outlook Express is broken. We can send no e-mails, the address book won't load. All the error messages say to reload OE. Problem is, all of this stuff came pre-installed from Dell and I have no original disks.

Is there any way out of this mess? I bend to the collective wisdom of this assembledge. All thoughts welcome.

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

Thanks for the ideas. I went to the MS website and downloaded the latest IE package. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to get it to work, but no avail. I tried everything I could think of, but the same problems kept cropping up. There was a "cpl" file in the windowssystem folder that wouldn't load and then two or three "dll's" in the OE folder that wouldn't load. It was always the same ones too. I tried renaming them to see if fresh copies would be supplied (they were). I tried copying versions from my wife's laptop (no difference). I tried logging on to this site to update you with the file names, but of course, I wasn't registered with my home email address. I tried to register, but the confimation would get emailed to me and by then my OE mail was completely trashed. In short, I am stumped and ready to toss the bloody thing out the window.

If there are any more suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I understand your frustration Douglas, had a similar problem myself some time back, nearly drove me nuts! I ended up going back to a previous version of MSIE, which shows itself when you try to uninstall it, This solved my problem, I took it back to version 5, then reinstalled it up again to version 6, all fixed. Have you tried going back to a previous version? Dont give up on it yet. :-)

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

    Cyberdance and all,

Uninstalling both OE and IE, then reinstalling V6 of IE did the trick. OE now comes up and the address book is again functional (my daughter thanks you). I am experiencing one persistant problem tho, and since I am sending this from work - not home - I can't be specific, but I can't print an email. For some reason, OE isn't communicating with the printer. I can copy/paste to Word and print from there, but it's a small pain. I'll try to remember to get the error message and post it. Now that OE is working, I can post it from home.

    Thanks for all your help.

Douglas if you don't mind, what OS are you using?

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

    Douglas--

The printing mechanism of Outlook Express is totally dependent upon the print engine that Internet Explorer uses. The message has to be open to print it, and the preview pane has to be enabled. Those are probably not the problem, but I didn't want to leave it out.

In light of your recent installation, I'd then check IE>File>Page Setup and see if any selection changes things with the different source selections on the pull down. On mine they are less than explicit but that can be a cause of the email messages not printing, and I'd try different ones. Mine prints fine and I'm on Automatic Select, but there are also Source 1, Manual Feed (Tray 1), Tray 1, and Printer (Auto Select).

Next thing I'd do is run System File Checker. It can quickly fix IE, OE, or XP in many situations. It may have fixed you totally without reinstalling. Down side--none but 20-25 min. to run--put in your CD, and at the dos prompt or run box type "sfc /purgecache" that'll take 5 seconds, then type "sfc /scannow" with a space after the sfc and lose the quotes. Put in your XP CD first, and a progress bar will run and you may have to keep (annoyance) hitting retry along the way. Desktop won't have a completion box but Event Viewer alwasys will at time you finished.

If above steps don't fix this, I'd try a tip from Kelly's XP/IE/OE site. It's pasted here:

"Tip: Mail and/or Folders are missing: Close OE. Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden files and folders. Then do a Search for *.dbx...Open OE/File/Import. Set search options to search hidden files, folders and system folders. Inbox is under a hidden folder."

    hth,

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

There is one additional fix if the other methods I suggested don't work. I know you installed IE6V6 which means IE6SP1 from the MS site. We all know that implies you installed OE6 and now you have it back with the annoyance, but if System File Checker and I would have linked the KB had I known your OS.

This is from Kelly's Korner OE Section:

Tip: Re-install Outlook Express - Enable Reinstallation of Internet Explorer or OE (Line 114).

    You'll find Line 114 at:

    Kelly's Tweaks

After running this edit, rename the CatRoot2 folder (WindowsCatRoot2) and then go to Start/Run and enter

%SystemRoot%Inf. Locate the MSOE50.INF file. Right click it and select Install.

How'd you make out with your "print email OE" problem" you posted on the 5th? Did any of the suggestions pan out for you? Did you find an alternative way to fix it?

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

    Hi Guys,

When I got to work yesterday, I forwarded all of the email responses regarding this problem to my home address. When I got home, the email was there, but OE helpfully stripped all the attached (forwarded) emails thinking that I was trying to infiltrate myself (gotta love microsoft). I tried printing the email and received the same error message. I tried to alt/printscreen the message and email it to myself here at work, but no go. It wouldn't paste. So, I'll now print all of your emails and run the procedures when I get home. If it ain't one thing, it's another.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

OK, I'm writing from home. In response to SMBP's post, I tried to pull up "page setup" from the IE File menu and got the following error:

Error occured raising the Page Setup Dialog
    Error: 18 Permission denied

I then tried to print from IE and got the same error message that I get in OE. That error has the yellow triangle with the exclamation point followed by:

An error has occured on the script for this page
    Line: 237
    Char: 2
    Error: permission denied
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:WINDOWSSYSTEMSHDOCLC.DLL/preview.dlg

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
    YES NO

I then tried to find System File Checker, but was unsuccessful. Remember, I am running ME and have no system disks.

    Cool, precise error message + search engine = possible answers <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I have seen the following suggestions:

    1. <LI>Caused by spyware; download a program that detects Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) and clear them out. Here's list:
      http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/spyware.htm

<LI>Contact printer vendor for instructions or fixes
      http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1061072265

<LI>Replace your DISPEX.DLL file (easier said than done, apparently, as most of the instructions seem to involve boot disks)
      http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/r1058481686
      http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1054420566 (many different error messages)

<LI>Miscellaneous, including SP1 and disabling third party browser extensions
      http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/t1028092843
An MSMVP on usenet also pointed to the third party browser extensions issue and provided this link:
      http://www.coribright.com/Windows/Article two.htm

<LI>A number of links into the MSKB from the MVPs (most seem to pre-date the IE6-related problems or relate to slightly different errors)
      http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/ans...tm#preview_dlg

<LI>Try installing a different way, this was apparently a paid support answer (posted to Usenet)

I paid $35.00 to one of the richest men in the world for a fault that came with his company's recommended download. I am a mother of three (one in college) who makes less
      than $50,000/year. Stick it Bill!

      Step 1:
Action:downloading internet explorer in minimal mode and in the advanced tab we chose download only SAVED AS NOTED BELOW
Result:then restarted computer in safe mode (BY PRESSING F8 AS SOON AS THE COMPUTER WAS TURNED ON)

      Step 2:
Action:in safe mode gone into c:windowswindows update setup filesie6setup
Result:then started installing internet explorer in typical mode

restarted the computer and internet explorer started printing
Like diets, all of these explanations have their internal logic, but I really can't predict which one will work for you. As long as one of them does... <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Re: Help,Multiple Problems (5.50.4133.2400)

    OK, an update.

I finally got OE to print using the last suggestion - opening Windoze in safe mode and reinstalling IE6 from there. Don't know why it works, but it does. Nice to have the print function back.

Now, if I can just figure out what the bootup error messages mean (Can't update file %1 from %2....)
