Digital Certificates and Signatures (Word/Office 2002)

    **[Edited to add question below]**

OK, it looks to me as if I need a digital certificate in order to create a Global Template for Word that doesn't require the user to lower their security level from high, but still actually run. I have used Selfcert.exe for myself, but can it be used within an organization without having to run it at each workstation? Microsoft says it is meant for you and you alone...

    **[ADDITIONAL QUESTION]**

I have found info on how Selfcert certificates act on other PCs. At least it will be possible to distribute, though easy to "forge." BUT in Microsoft's MSDN article "Code Signing Office XP Visual Basic for Applications Macro Projects" the author shows a Table which claims that IF you have "Trust all installed add-ins and templates" checked, Word will "load the add-in or macro silently." I have not found this to be true. Am I doing something wrong, perhaps or is this just... not true?

Any wisdom out there about this?

    Thanks!

"Trust all installed add-ins and templates" only works for certain folders, I believe, almost certainly not including network shares. Where is your global template being opened from when the user gets the Enable/Disable dialog?

    Hey Jefferson!

My global template is in crogram filesmicrosoft officeoffice10startup. That folder has been cited as one "Trust all installed add-ins..." will recognize.

However, thanks to your question, I looked in Word's File Locations and saw that Startup was pointed to a startup folder under my documents and settings. This is a default setting and it never occurred to me to question it since the templates about which I was complaining were loading. This was as a result of being in the "common" startup folder, but they were not being trusted because they were not in the folder specified in Word. !!!!

Once I changed the reference in the File Locations and reopened Word, all worked! I didn't even have templates in my personal startup folder as I didn't really know it was there.

Live and learn. And thanks so much...

That's a useful find, the difference between loading and trusting. Thanks for posting the details.
