Excel not Running within IE 5.5 (5.5 - Latest Updates)

I'm using IE 5.5 at work (we're blocked from downloading 6 for some reason). When I click on an Excel file on a web page, I get a DNS error. However, I can right-click the Excel file and download it to disk just fine, so the file is there. Excel just won't run within IE. Word runs fine, but not Excel (I'm using Excel 2000). Anybody have this problem before and have an idea on how to get it to work??

    Thx.

Yes, I can open an Excel file from the hard drive. Does this maybe it's just a problem opening one from the Web, and maybe this location in particular? If you know of another web location that might have an Excel file posted, I can try opening it from there.

    Thx.

Will this Link either the info or the Bill James link supplied by Hans originally help?

Re: Excel not Running within IE 5.5 (5.5 - Latest Updates)

Thanks, but not really. As far as I can tell, the referenced messages are for adding a method to edit HTML code within IE. I just want to be able to double-click the link to the file and have it open in Excel within IE. This is what happens if I double-click a Word or PDF file, they just open within IE. The Excel file is there because I can right-click and save it to disk. IE just won't run Excel within IE for some reason. I don't know if this is a new development or something that has never worked, but I noticed it today when I tried to open an Excel file. The workaround is to save the file to disk, but I really don't want to save these files to disk, I just want to view them within IE. I'll keep checking out those messages to see if there's something else in there I missed, though.

    Thx.

That sounds like a MIME Content Type error...

I believe what you arre talking about is clicking a link to an .xls file and having Excel open the link. If have devised a little (incomplete) tool to help find out what is going on in situations like this. Attached is a .vbs file. Download it and run it (double-click). Enter XLS when it asks for the File Extension. Copy and Paste your results here. Thanks.

Here are the results. I screen captured the results and pasted into a Word DOC.

    Thx.

By the way, I've since upgraded to IE6. Someone showed me where it was on our network.

Oh, and the results I just sent you pop up fine within IE as a Word doc when I double-click the "attachment" in the previous message I posted to you!

    Thx.

I changed that into a JPG -- so we can see it in "real time". Hmmm... there is no MIME CLSID information. Mine doesn't have any either.

Let me attach a bogus .xls file here...

Here is a "link" to an .xls file...

And my computer (IE6) opens that FINE inside Internet Explorer.

Change to .JPG... I was wondering how images appeared in emails. Thanks for that.

I tried the .XLS file. It displays with the Excel icon, but trying to open gives me the same DNS error - page cannot be displayed. I guess it's not the other web location with a problem, but my setup.

    Thx.

It may be something to do with your Network setup. It somewhat surprises me that your Network seems to be blocking Excel but not Word (which is more likely to have risks attached). Have you checked with your IT Admin?

It may be the network setup. I checked with the guy who maintains the site where the Excel file is (it's an Intranet), but I'll check with our internal IT guys about the network setup.

    Thx.

Re: Excel not Running within IE 5.5 (5.5 - Latest

I've done some more checking. It must be network related. My paralegal can open Excel files in IE. She can also download templates from microsoft.com, and I can't. She can also watch a legal video that I've had to watch at home because I couldn't get it through the firewall. I thought everyone was the same, but it appears that different servers have different restrictions. I haven't confirmed it's the network, but all indications point to it.

Thanks for everybody's help so far!

    Rich--

These links may not nail it but may give you some ideas. Must be your firewall, or a similar issue, because MS Press IE 5 Book showcases that IE 5.5 can open any Office document. Hopefully if your computer is down the hall from your paralegals, they could configure things so you wouldn't have to do this at home.
