EXPLORER.EXE Blows Up When Viewing "My Computer"

This is a new one for me.

After many blissful months of trouble free operation, my PC has been subjected to numerous (ill-planned and poorly executed) security changes - some to the file system, some to user rights. Exactly what was changed, I will never be privy to - no matter. All I know is that my once fine here, my fellow PC haters... install is now going down the

I've managed to clean almost all of the problems up except for this very nasty one that began when my user profile was re-created. I dumped all of my documents into the new one and told Windows to copy the user profile in the System tab, and now....

Pressing Win+E on the keyboard: Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be shut down.

Open Explorer manually, and it's fine until you select "My Computer" on the left hand side, and then...Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be shut down.

Only My Computer does this. I can't imagine why it itself instead of giving me an access denied if it's a rights or access issue. And I'm really gunning for ideas here....anyone got one, no matter how crazy, that I can pursue?

Cheers,
-Mark

Re: EXPLORER.EXE Blows Up When Viewing

Does it happen when logged in as another user?
I've never been comfortable with copying profiles ever since I tried it once on NT4 and then deleted the original. Probably hadn't used the correct method, but of course all the links were simply shortcuts to the original profile...

No, other users don't have that problem....in fact, I believe other users now don't even have view access to the C: drive. Administrator appears to have no issues whatsoever. So it most definitely is a rights issue of some kind.

I seem to recall that there was a tool in the NT 4 Resource Kit that would reset the ACLs - does anyone know if a) this is correct or I'm off my rocker, or if there is an equivalent tool in the 2000 Resource Kit?

Mucho Gracias to leif for responding so quickly!

Leif - you rock! Now I can cross every finger, toe, my eyes and tongue and hope like mad that this works....

Thanks for the heads up!
