text on white ground in table won't shade (Word 2000 Sp1)

forgive me if this has been answered anywhere before, but it's a little tricky when you can't search <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

anyway ...
have Word (2000 sp1) document with several tables. want to shade some rows. works fine in all but one table where the text appears against a white background which won't shade (get nice grey border instead).

have tried importing into new document (no change); also converting table-to-text and back again (no change)

anyone any pointers?

Could you attach a document with the offending table, or a part of it? Replace proprietary or sensitive information by dummy text.

i've shaded the offending table in yellow ...

Two different forms of shading are competing with each other in the offending table. White shading has been set at the paragraph level and yellow shading at the cell/table level; get rid of the paragraph shading as follows:

- Select the table.
- Select Format | Borders and Shading.
- Select Paragraph from the 'Apply to' dropdown list.
- Set the Fill to 'No Fill'.
- Click OK.

The paragraphs will now become transparent, so that the yellow shading that has been applied at the cell/table level will show through.

Note: you can also select the table and press Ctrl+Q, this will revert the paragraph formatting to the style definition; all manual paragraph formatting will be lost, not only the white shading.
