Pasting from Word into FrontPage (FP2000)

"Those who do not learn from history will be condemned to repeat it..."

How true this is, for at least a year ago I asked what could be done about the mounds of unnecessary rubbish that appeared in the Frontpage HTML for paragraphs which had been copied from Word (in this case Word 2002). Leif and Catharine were very helpful then, but I have forgotten all they said...

However
a) the post has probably been "culled"
even if it hadn't been, there's no Search engine to find it.

Can anyone remember what can validly be removed? I'm thinking of stuff like :

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:0in;margin-right:20.75pt;margin-bottom:
0in;margin-left:.25in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;tab-stops:1.0in"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">

<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
<font face="Script MT Bold"><font color=blue><big><big>John</big></big></font color=blue></font face=script>

Ita, esto, quidcumque...

<UL>In your paragraph tag, you don't need any of that unless you want to mimic the exact appearance it had in Word. Note the bold part relating to your second to last question.
<span style="font-size:14.0pt">
<UL>If you want the text between the span tags to be 14 point, you could keep this. If it applies to the whole paragraph, you could move it to the

<UL>This is Word's way of preserving two spaces in a row. If you want two spaces in a row in HTML you typically use a non-breaking space for one of them.
carriage returns seem to cause no vertical space to be inserted
<UL>Well... browsers are supposed to suppress all whitespace down to a single space of a single blank line. What does FP normally do to make vertical whitespace?
You could search for something called HTMLTidy and see if that speeds the clean-up.

I've tried HTML Tidy and, so far, all I have been able to do is to make the original HTML file bigger! I will have to crack the arcane method of specifying options, before I can get any further...

Well, Word is doing two things. First, it is trying to create "legal" CSS HTML. Second, it is inserting proprietary "round trip" tags so that it can recover style and other formatting information when you re-open it in Word. Your job is to disentangle the two.

Or you can go back, copy from Word, paste into Notepad, copy from Notepad, then paste into FrontPage. I use a couple of macros in Word to convert bold and italic to the appropriate tags, and I use the two-step method to rub-off the rest of Word's influence.

Yes, I can see why it's doing it -- I just wish it didn't assume that I wanted to do it!

I will have to rebuild the document via NOTEPAD, I fear, as you suggest.

I think that rates a big <big>Grrrh</big>...
