Are you on a company computer, which is under the control of your IT department?

If so, contact them, they may have set the blocking.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Flash--

Hopefully, the annoyance.org thread regedit will help but if not:

I'm assuming you have XP Home, so one of the fixes involving GPE may not be available. You can bring TM up 3 ways--1) Ctrl+Alt+Delete 2) Rt. Click Notif Area (Sys Tray) 3) Ctrl+Alt+Esc. This KB may help if TM is running in "Tiny Footprint Mode" but I'm guessing that's not the case. Still....

Two Non-Viral Related Repairs for Task Manager:

(1)You can try this to repair:

Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the %SystemRoot%system32 directory. If you cannot find the file, you can extract it from the Windows XP CD. To do so, you can perform the following steps:

    a. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM.
    b. Click Start, Run, type cmd and press Enter.
    c. At the Command Prompt mode, type the following command:

For example, if the drive letter of your CD-ROM is F, you can type the following commands:

    F:
    cd i386
    expand taskmgr.ex_ %SystemRoot%SYSTEM32taskmgr.exe

(2)You can try this automatic regedit from Enable the Task Manager (Line 113) at Kelly's Korner Tweaks Section

Hopefully you don't have a virus or worm, because the repairs have more steps and take longer, but just in case:

This worm, a tough guy, called Cdog.C disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:

Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then: Download then Merge the edit on line 251 then delete all the files mentioned in the above link. Line 251 Kelly's Tweaks
To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
