Default style in tables (Word XP SP1)

When adding a table in Word 2000 using the Table icon, the default paragraph style was Normal. In Word XP it is Table Grid. I would like the default to be Normal.

I can see how to amend the Table Grid style to look the same as Normal but that is not quite the same. If I changed Normal in some way, Table Grid would not automatically pick up the changes.

Can someone help on this please?

Table grid is based on Table Normal, which appears to pick up the formatting of Normal - if you change the font style or color of Normal then Table Grid appears to automatically pick up the changes.

Thanks for that. It hadn't occurred to me that Microsoft would give the style another name and then make it inherit everything from Normal. Not sure I can see the logic of that. Do you know of a reason? Just curious.
Sounds like it could be fun if you change something in Table Grid and then change something in Normal. I'll have to play around and see how they interact.

Table styles are new for Word 2002. They seem to include some additional features over paragraph styles (such as table borders) - but I've never spent much time playing with them either.

Ah! Sounds like you can set it up to have the borders you want as a default and keep your normal style for the text so that updates automatically. Sounds useful, I think I heard the playtime bell.
    Many thanks for your help.

Word XP displays the table stylename in the style dropdown when your cursor is inside a paragraph of Normal style. When your cursor is in any other paragraph style, you see the actual paragraph style and not the table style. This to be a bug/feature that is new to Word XP.
