    Grabbing an MS KB URL

I'm probably the last one to discover this, but I've found a neat way to grab the URL of an MS KB article after a search.

Normally, copying the URL in the address field would give you something like:
    <font color=448800>http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...&FR=0&qry=reset ACL&rnk= 2&src= DHCS_ MSPSS_gn_ SRCH&SPR= WIN2000</font color=448800>

As (I believe) everything after the ? is superfluous, you need to select the previous text but, by default (in IE anyway), the entire link is selected.

However, if you click on the 'Send to a friend' link on the right of the article, up pops an email message, complete with required URL and article title.

    Certainly saves me time.

You're just showing off because YOU have a friend ....

... but the joke's on you - my copy never arrived!

    Thanks for the tip.

    Hi Leif:

I didn't get my copy either. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> An alternative way to copy an MSKB url, for keyboard enthusiasts, which is fairly fast is:
    1. Tab (to activate address bar)
    2. Home key
    3. Shift+RightArrow until the "asp" is selected.
    4. Ctrl+C

Re: Grabbing an MS KB URL

    Hi Leif:

I've been experimenting and there is another way to quickly grab a URL from a search return in the Knowledge Base.

    1. Place your cursor in the address bar.
    2. Press Home.
    3. Hold Ctrl+Shift down & press the right arrow. IE will jump to each part of the URL (slashes and punctutation marks). It takes timing but you can select everything from http to ASP?.

Try Alt+D...it selects the whole url in one stroke.

Re: Grabbing an MS KB URL

    Hi Paul:

That's a good thing to know, but won't solve the original problem. When you do a search on the MS Knowledge Base, you end up with a long URL that inlcudes your search options. We're trying to find a fast way to select everything from the beginning of the URL to the "ASP", without selecting everything.

Have you noticed it does that with Searches here too. I always trim them manually when I include them as a link.

Re: Grabbing an MS KB URL

I'll bite on Eileens' suggestion with a dumb question I have asked myself before. How do you know exactly where to trim the URL and still have it point exactly where you want (without testing)? Some URL's which are deep in the site hierarchy (some US Federal Government sites come to mind) are huge numbers of digits meaning nothing to me. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Also, I think's Leif's original tip (beginning of thread) was intended to be a way you -can- get the most complete-but-concise URL.

Umm, am I getting off-topic here, having gone from the specific (MSKB) to the general?

Ok Phil. I guess in my enthusiasm to share a neat shortcut (being a keyboard junkie) I overlooked the original problem. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>

Re: Grabbing an MS KB URL

My way takes longer than Eileen's. After a search, I click on another post in the thread, then back on the original. I now have the URL without the search criteria.

No, not with the dreaded <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=[censored] border=0> button - click on it again for a real reload.

Re: Grabbing an MS KB URL

    Hi John:

I've had the same question. I don't know that there's an easy way to determine except by trial & error and it only pays if you're doing it on the same site over & over. So the KB & this Lounge are good ones to know.

So far as I know, the technique works with searches in a database, but not "deep URLs. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>Maybe someone else has a "secret".

No, not the back button. If I did use that, I wouldn't admit to it.

What I should have said was:
My way takes longer than Eileen's. After a search, I click on another post in the thread, then I click on the original post again.
