    Level 1 Attachments (OL 2000)

OK I heard that Outlook has something called Level 1 attachments, and Level 2 attachments.

What are they and why is level 1 hidden?

Re: Level 1 Attachments (OL 2000)

You may remember that there were e-mail viruses (Melissa, ILOVEYOU) that caused a lot of damage a few years ago; they sent e-mails with an attachment that purported to be a document or picture, but was in fact a script that could be executed. Microsoft reacted with an update for Outlook that is intended to protect users from this kind of e-mail virus.

Some extensions are deemed so dangerous that Outlook with the security update completely denies access to attachments with these extensions; these extensions are in Level 1. Examples are .exe and .vbs (VBScript).
Other extensions are slightly less dangerous. You can't open attachements with one of these extensions directly from within the e-mail, but you can save them to disk.

Ken Slovak's Attachment Options allows you to see which extensions are in Level 1, and to move some of them to Level 2 if you feel like living dangerously.

In some cases, it's hard to understand why some extensions are in Level 1 and others aren't. Word documents and Excel workbooks aren't blocked, but Access databases are. All of these can contain automatically executing code.

Excellent explanation, and once I read your post, I realized that I am living dangerously by operating with Outlook 2000 with only SP1. I'll update to SP3 ASAP.

    Thanks
