Temp File (WIN XP 5.1 SP1)

There is a file called Perflib_Perfdata_3f4.dat that appears in the Temp folder.
I can delete all other files in there except for this one.
I have learned how to delete files through the command prompt etc, but don't want to until I know
what this file is and why it can't be deleted. Is it a system file of some sort?

Thanks for any info on Perflib_Perfdata_3f4.dat

This type of file belongs to the system monitor. Usually, these files live in the WindowsSystem32 folder and they are deleted when system monitor closes normally, but they are left behind if system monitor crashes. I don't know why such a file should appear in your Temp folder, but a lot of people report the same problem in the Microsoft newsgroups, without a clear explanation or solution. If you still can't delete the file after restarting your PC, you might try the tip from http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBG/TIP3300/rh3343.htm with %temp% instead of %systemroot%system32.

    Thanks Hans !
When I restart the computer, the file is not there initially. As soon as I click the Temp folder,
    the file appears !
When I try to delete it at the command prompt, it gives me the same message !
(Can't delete because someone else or another process etc......)
    Weird -
And you're right - I did ask this on the MS forum for XP and they couldn't tell me
what the file actually did ! They also gave me a command line prompt to delete it, but
    still couldn't.

I guess this is just another "Unsolved Mystery" for the time being !

    Thanks again!

You can only delete the old ones, not the ones with a date since the last boot.

How big is the file? On my machine they are 16kb, with a few 0kb.

I have a bunch of temp's too - they have information about windows updates hotfixes:
Machine Name Product Bulletin Q Number Reason Status
Mary(192.168.1.99) WINDOWS XP SP1 All baseline security hotfixes have been applied. Information

"You can only delete the old ones, not the ones with a date since the last boot."
    That answers that !!!

The file is 16kb also. I'll just leave it alone now knowing it's supposed to be there!!

    Thank you Mary !
