    Service Pack 4

Hi all. <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> The latest PC Magazine notes that Service Pack 4 is now available for Windows 2000. Given the kind of relaibility some of the MS' service packs have seen, I am wondering if anyone has installed this yet and/or whether or not they have heard of any problems with it. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

    Ron--

The concensus from most people in most groups is that it's doing fine. Joe Perez mentions he installed it on 12 machines no problem in the first thread below:

    Thread 2 SP4
    Thread 3 SP4 Mixed Reviews

You can google and get some perspective. Here's the thing. If you don't like any side-effects of SP4, you can uninstall it--unlike some Direct X Upgrades or Win Media Betas. See:

    <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15> worth

We have just created a new image with SP4 on and it has broken Access 2000.

    Tests have revealed the following:-

    Installed Windows 2000 with SP 4 - Didn't Work <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=16 height=16>
    Installed Windows 2000 with SP 3 - WORKED <img src=/S/fanfare.gif border=0 alt=fanfare width=31 height=23>
    Installed Windows 2000 with SP 3 then while Office was installed upgraded to service pack 4 - WORKED <img src=/S/fanfare.gif border=0 alt=fanfare width=31 height=23>
    Installed Windows 2000 with SP 3 Upgraded to SP 4 then installed Office - Didn't Work <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=16 height=16>

    <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

The technicians have been seen with VERY large hammers and are about to revert the newly imaged machines back to Win2K SP3. From our very limited experience it appears to be a crock - Bill G is off our Christmas Card list for this year!

We've upgraded most of our machines still running W2K--with no reported problems so far--so I might just upgrade my own . . .

    Re: Service Pack 4

My WIN2K system has been running fine with the SP4 installed except for one significant (by my estimation) problem: Norton Personal Firewall 2001 will not permit any ftp downloads, and the webpages were severly slooowwwed down. Reinstalling the NPF app did no good, and of course both Microsoft and Symantec had no patches/fixes identified.

After removing NPF2001 and installing ZoneAlarm, V6, order was restored. My personal thoughts are that MS has plugged a few unadvertised holes, since they are now in the security business.

    Further to my previous post.

Win 2K SP4 installs Jet SP7 amongst a load of other things

    We've just downloaded Jet SP8 which seems to fix the problem! <img src=/S/fanfare.gif border=0 alt=fanfare width=31 height=23>
