.DOC included in custom templates folder (97 SR2)

    Hi all,
On my newest Office 97 install (on a Pentium 4 with Win 2000 Pro), I created a subfolder for custom templates.
    The problem is:
Each time I select File | New... in order to display the tabbed templates dialog box, my folder does appear with its .DOT contents.
BUT... it also includes all documents already created with these templates. You know what? The more it finds such documents (on various local hard drives), the more time it takes to display the dialog box! What a pain.
Even though I've been using this Word stuff since years, I never heard of this. How can I ask Word to ONLY explore the template folders contents (and ONLY look for .DOT files, of course) ?
And... please, don't restrain advice to upgrading Office ;-)
Specific stuff: even I use a rather large number of software on this PC, I installed nothing unusual recently, and this install is rather recent (3 months). All security patches applied.
One more thing: several of the newly created templates embed an Excel spreadsheet within, a nice feature for invoices, purchase orders or quotations. I hope it's not the origin of the problem.

I assume that the folder you created is a subfolder of the folder set as the location for User Templates (in the File Locations tab of Tools | Options...)

Open this subfolder in Windows Explorer and check carefully if it contains (besides templates) a shortcut to another folder or to your computer.

I have never heard of this behavior before; it certainly isn't as it should be. I don't know what could cause it; I recommend that you read Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> and try the various steps described there.

    Hi again,

    Thanks for the link.

    Some more checks:
    - Definitely not a virus (full scan of C<img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    - C: hard disk is not indexed for fast file search (approximate translation back from French into English) in C: Properties, General tab.

What I did as detailed in your link:
    - no crazy temp files
    - problem persists when running "winword.exe /a"

I found a new indication of the problem:
I just noticed that there is a tab corresponding to a folder named "Projets" of drive E: in the template tabs. After some more check, I saw that the tab contains exactly all 42 (presently) .DOC files found in its various subdirectories. This must be [linked to] the culprit, one way or another.
In Tools | Options, Default folders tab, "E:Projets" is not mentioned.
But... the documents' default folder is E: (and should remain that way, I've worked that way without problems), as well as the groupware templates folder.

Oh, by the Great Wakan Tanka... as soon as I changed the groupware templates folder, things reverted BACK to normal again!
Problem solved - thanks for your help! Who could have guessed?

    Hello Henri,

I'm glad you solved it yourself. It is hard to trouble-shoot this kind of problem from a distance.
