Corrupt Database? (A2k SR1)

The following error is received when opening a database:

The Database.... needs to be repaired or isn't a database file. You or another user may have unexpectantly quit access while a access database is open. Do you want access to attempt to repair the database? If you select yes, you get a message that the file is not a database file.

The database is used on our network and it is likely the network "hiccuped" and the connection was severed. In the past I have been able to restore connectivity by deleting the ldb file or if corruption exists by copying the tables out to another database. Unfortunately in this case, neither works and I cant copy out the tables to a new database. There is a database level password associated with the database.

Any ideas on how to get the database to open as our IT staff just told us that their daily backups haven't been done since the 20th?

Thanks for your ideas.
Regards,

Gary

I'm not hopeful (don't you just IT). There are some more things you can try, but from your description, I fear that the database is toast.

1. Make a backup now, so that you can mess with a copy.
2. Download Jetcomp. This is a stand-alone utility that may be able to repair a database that the internal Compact and Repair command can't handle (Jetcomp doesn't try to open the database.)
3. If that doesn't work, see if you can get data from the tables through ODBC, for instance in Excel. In Excel, select Data | Get External Data | New Database Query...

Hans,

Thanks, you are a genius.

BTW - Both ways worked.
- Jetcomp allowed the database to be compacted into a new database.
- Using Excel and ODBC, when trying to attach to the database, a message was received that the database needs to be compacted and then used the excel ODBC interface to compact it. This worked as well and did not create a new database.

You know, if you ever collected all of the "beers" everyone owes you for your help, you could open a brewery.

Thanks again. You just saved me many hours of work.
Regards,

Gary
