Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

My daughter who is away at school has encountered a problem with Word 2000. I am not familiar the word application so I am hoping someone can assist me. She says that her tool bars have disappeared & she does not know how to get them back. She also states that there are no arrow keys or anything to indicate that the bars may be hidden. Everything appears to work correctly but there are no tool bars only the ruler. Hot keys work but can not get help to try & figure this out.

Any help would be appreciated.
Running winxp, word 2000.

One thought ...if you open Word and click on View>Toolbars are any of the entries on the dropdown menu clicked on? If they are not, then she can simply click the toolbars she wants to make visible and that should do it. If they are clicked and are still not showing, then perhaps some global setting was inadvertently set to Off. HTH

Re: Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

Thanks for the thought but according to her none of the tool bars are there. It is my understanding that only the window frame & ruler are visible.
I am in agreement with you that there may be some global setting, but I don't know how to get to them. As an alternative, I am in the process of copying the install cd & sending it to her so that she can use the repair option. Was hoping for something faster. I feel that it may be something really silly . She let one of her room mates use it the other day & since then its been all down hill,

Thanks again for trying. .If you have any more ideas please let me know.

One possibility is that her DATA key is corrupt. Another possibility is that the normal.dot is corrupt. Instructions for changing both are found in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. To shortcut it, searching for normal.dot & renaming it to normal.old (while Word is closed) may solve the problem.
Hope this helps,

It might be that something has become corrupted, but you could try this and see if it gives a quick fix:

From inside Word, press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
Press Ctrl+G to open or focus on the Immediate window.
Enter the following command then press the Enter key to run it:

CommandBars("Menu Bar").Enabled = True

Same with:

CommandBars("Menu Bar").Visible = True

Assuming the menu bar reappears over in Word, close the Visual Basic Editor window and try using View > Toolbars > Customize... to recover the rest.

If that doesn't work, look for Phil's Star Post (listed in the index to star posts on the Lounge Matters board) and work through that Systematic Approach to Troubleshooting.

Does she have the menu options visible or are they hidden as well? The window might be in Full Screen mode. Full Screen an option under the View Menu but once it is selected it is not immediately apparent how to get back especially if someone hides the toolbar that would have done it for you.

If she presses Esc does this help?

Thank You ALL for the quick response.
I will be calling her to-day & try each of the suggestions, hopefully one will work, I am curious as to what happened but not being able to get hands on is a draw back. I will walk her through some of the suggested fixes, she is very smart (3.95) but has some technical limitations as a result of her blond hair.

I think she has gotten herself in the "Fullscreen". I now longer have a 2000 version on any machines, hope some one who does can help in getting out of this mode.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

Bernie--

This seems to be a known phenomenon in Office 2000 including Word 2000 and we had a similar thread yesterday in the General Office section. There are a number of circumstances where this happens in Office 2000, and I tried to cover most and their workaround or fix. You can send these links to your daughter and th is should solve her problem in Word 2000. Part of what people complain about often is by design. The full screen mode situation is just one of the contributors to the missing toolbar complaint in Office 2000--there are others:

"Why do Office toolbars and menus work this way? The new design isn't just intended to reduce clutter on your screen. Office is actually personalizing its interface to fit the way you work. As you work, your Office program keeps track of the commands and toolbar buttons you select. Then it makes those commands or buttons visible on each menu or toolbar, and hides the commands or buttons that you don't use.If you don't want personalized menus, you can specify that Office always display full menus, the way they were displayed in previous versions. In any Office program, do the following:
On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Options tab>Clear the Menus show recently used commands first check box. Note: Following this procedure affects all of your Office programs, not just the one you're working in."

These articles should help her get back what she wants:

Also reference these links to MSKB's and the Microsoft Office Assistance Center:

Re: Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

Bernie--

After working on another similar thread, I think now, the quickest thing for her to do might be to follow Kaplinb's suggestion on the other thread, that's also covered in the KB below which is to reinstall the shortcut toobar through Office Tools either through Add/Remove or from the Office CD--both will work.

Kaplinb's steps I pasted here--

"You cannot add "Office" toolbar because it already exists (it can be only one toolbar with the same name). Your "Office" toolbar is in the location Application DataMicrosoftOfficeShortcut Bar in WINDOWS or DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS< your username > folder. When you open "Customize" dialog, click "Toolbars" tab and, if it is not listed, "Add toolbar" button, on the nex dialog "Make toolbar for this Folder" radio button, "Browse" button and point it to the Application DataMicrosoftOfficeShortcut BarOffice folder as described above. If Shortcut BarOffice folder is deleted, try to re-install Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar. To do so, make sure you have your Office Installation CD ready. Then go to Start | Settings (except Windows XP) | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Change or Remove Programs button on the left pane (or Install/Uninstall tab) and pick up "Microsoft Office 2000..." from the list. Then click Change (or Add/Remove), from the dialog choose "Add or Remove Features", then navigate to Office Tools | Microsoft Office Shortcut bar. Click on it and from pop-up menu choose "Not available". Click Update Now, OK. Then repeat all these steps once again and from pop-up menu choose "Run from My Computer". Click Update Now, OK"

See:

264625: OFF2000: How to Install or Repair Microsoft Office 2000

and see the screenshot which is probably an old been there and done that for you:

Post 291235 Screenshot

Believe this will be the best for her but KB's on other situations especially Full Screen View may apply.

Good luck,

Hi SMBP:
The Office Shortcut Bar has nothing to do with missing toolbars in Word.

Re: Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

I understand the Office Shortcut bar may have nothing to do with the Office toolbars that Bernie's daughter has found missing. I understand the logic part of the puzzle that the shortcut bar has nothing to do with the missing toolbars in the KB's. But I think that the missing toolbars that started the thread are the subject of the 4 KB's and the KB's offer a solution toward some of the causes of why people are missing toolbars in Word--the most common being full sized screen view. The possibilities in your post 290626 above which seem to be quick solutions to try.

Re: Disappearing Tool Bars (word 2000)

Hi SMBP:
I think you're getting sidetracked. The original question had to do with missing Word toolbars only. Previous posts had already mentioned the Full Screen as one possibility, so I don't think that needed to be repeated. You eventually said:

>>After working on another similar thread, I think now, the quickest thing for her to do might be to follow Kaplinb's suggestion on the other thread, that's also covered in the KB below which is to reinstall the shortcut toobar through Office Tools either through Add/Remove or from the Office CD--both will work.<<

I felt this was incorrect (as you seem to agree) & so I corrected it, so it would not confuse someone else. While some of the links you posted may be informative, I feel that it's best to keep the answers as much to the point as possible. Links that explain how someone can customize toolbars, links pertaining to PhotoDraw & Excel do not, in my opinion, help the original poster solve their problem.
