    Quick Report from Dynaset

Is there an easy way for my secretarial staff to create a report from data that they narrowed down using a filter? We are switching from Clarisworks on Apple to Access 2000 on Win98. The nicest thing about Claris is that they can narrow records down to the equivalent of a dynaset and then apply report or form layouts to the data. If I have to use parameter queries, I suppose I can but am looking for an answer that they can apply by themselves to simplify my life since I have 5 schools making this transition.

Simply create the filter and apply it to the report. I'm not familiar with ClarisWorks, and you didn't provide enough detail to get a more specific answer than that.

    Charlotte-
    Thanks for the quick reply.

I've gotten a new report to work from a filtered table. For example, I filter a 400 record table down to students in a specific teacher's class using filter by selection. This leaves me with 29 records. I push the new object button and choose report to print a class list. However, doing it this way means I have to create a new report object each time I want to do a quick ad hoc report. From your response, I get the feeling that I'm approaching this backwards and should be coming from the report side first but dont see how I apply the adhoc filter here.

As far as how Claris worked, I would filter records from a table and then apply an existing report or form object to the data by selecting it from a layout list. So what would happen is I would first do the equivalent of filter by selection and then apply an existing layout to print a report using the filtered records.

As always, thanks in advance for the help.
    Best regards

You could have a form screen with a combo box for the user to select the class they want to print. The report would be already created and based on a query that filtered your data using the selection made from the combo box. You could also have a button for previewing your report and another button for printing it.
