711 error for internet access (Window XP)

I lost access to the internet and when I try to fix it I get the following error message:

Cannot Load Remote Access Error 711

I have looked at the help in the microsoft website, and done what it told me to, but when I try to alter the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and
Remote Access Connection Manager, I get error 5 message.

Any help about fixing the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager would be helpful.

Not sure I understand the problem. What kind of internet connection do you have - dialup, DSL, cable, or eye-in-the-sky? Do you mean you can't surf or do email, etc. or are you trying to get remote assistance from Microsoft?

Re: 711 error for internet access (Window XP)

Sorry if I didnt make myself clear.

I lost all internet connection. I can not open to the interent, or download/send emails. My internet settings says their isnt any connections. My dial-up modem is working, and says that it exists. I have a CD form my internet supplier which is supposed to setup my computer/explorer/outlook to enable me to connect to the internet. I tried using it again and got the 711 error message. I tried to find a fix, and at first thought it was the Blaster virus (as to begin with it would kick me off the internet 30 seconds after logging on), but I got the counter for the virus and it didnt fix the problem (made it worse as now I cannot log on at all). I went to Microsoft website, and hunted round and finally found an article on how to fix the problem.

It said I needed to go and change the settings for Telephony, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager. When I checked my telephony was set as it should be, but when I tried to alter the Connection Managers settings it came up with an error 5 message. So the problem is with Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager.

I hope this makes it clearer.

I don't know the guts of it, but when I upgraded my daughter's machine from XP Home to XP Pro, one or both of these Services became disabled - I couldn't start at least one of them, even manually - and her ISP's help-line finally recognized it as a known issue with that upgrade, and walked me through a fix via registry edit.

I hope someone else here knows the details or how to find them.

Re: 711 error for internet access (Window XP)

Read this and make sure you look at the bottom of that page at the other two links. Windows XP, you receive 'Error 711: Cannot load Remote Access Service Connection Manager'

Also found this:
Windows XP, you receive 'Error 711: Cannot load Remote Access Service Connection Manager'
CAUSE
The Plug and Play service is stopped or disabled.
RESOLUTION
Go into Control Panel and click Services.
Start the Plug and Play service, and change the Startup mode from Manual or Disabled to Enabled.

This last deal I found said it had worked for some people with that same exact problem.

Run: regedit
Select folders in the following order:
-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
-SYSTEM
-Current Control Set
-Services
-RasMan
-PPP
-EAP
-when you get to this point, you should see 4 folders (numbered 4, 13, 25, 26)
-DELETE: folders 25 and 26
-Restart your computer.

This will restore your (old) connections

CBD: That Registry Edit was the one the ISP's help-line guy had me do. Worked perfectly.

Here is one more I found from Microsoft, it talks about having to do with SP1 Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is denied
