    hh.exe query

I have 3 versions of this file on my HD, the most recent being in /sfc (system file check) folder. The others are in c:windows and c:windowssystem. So in which of the windows folders should I place the newest version, so that it is the actively used file? OS: 98SE

    Re: hh.exe query

If you do a search on the net for C:WINDOWShh.exe and C:WINDOWSSYSTEMhh.exe. You will find it to show up eather way in many links. Most the ones I found were on C:WINDOWShh.exe

On my computer I found it in three different places. WinXP Pro
    C:WINDOWShh.exe
    C:WINDOWS$NtUninstallQ810565$hh.exe
    C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386hh.exe

So my guess is , won't hurt to put them in both places you found it on your computer.

    Re: hh.exe query

On my Win98SE machine I've never run SFC, so I don't have anything there. But I do have, like you, a copy in both C:Windows and C:WindowsSystem. The one in Windows is version 4.73.8412, HH1.21 dated April 1999. The copy in WindowsSystem is version 4.73.8561, HH 1.22 dated August 1999. Ya takes yer pick, but like much of the Windows stuff, I suspect the copy in WindowsSystem is the important one.

    Re: hh.exe query

Thanks to both you and Cowboy for the information. I have an odd mixture of builds on my box:
    windowssystem 4.72.7286
    windows 4.73.8412
    windowssfc 4.74.8875

I'm wondering where to get the most recent build that will be appropriate to 98SE and IE5. I found a reference to
    10-Jun-2002 17:56 5.2.3644.0, appropriate to 98SE but don't know if it's appropriate to IE5. Any ideas?

    thanks

    Re: hh.exe query

Adding to my own post here... I know, talking to myself again!
I followed some links on this and ended up at Microsoft HTML Help Downloads. I must confess that I'm now a bit confused. The advice is "Windows XP, 2000, ME, and 98 users should not run Hhupd.exe. Any urgent updates will be handled by means of service packs or Windows Update." ???

    Also,
"What files make up the HTML Help client? Where are they installed? Are they registered?
    The client files are:

    %windir%HH.EXE (not registered)
    %windir%system(32)HHCTRL.OCX (registered)
    %windir%system(32)ITSS.DLL (registered)
    %windir%system(32)ITIRCL.DLL (registered) "

So I guess that c:windows is the "official" location of hh.exe
