Deploy Office using Group Policy (XP)

    Hi

A while back, I was looking into Group Policy, and I realized that I could deploy Office XP using such. However, what I didn't realize was that every time a user logs on to a PC for the First Time, Office will just display a Dialog Box stating that it hasn't been installed for that user and then abruptly close (as opposed to just walking you through the setup process). Realizing that this was not desirable, I removed that Group Policy, but I am still haunted by it whenever someone wants to 'Hot Desk' (i.e., use a different PC if they're working in a different Office).

I have since learnt that it is possible to create an automated setup file that can be used with Group Policy so that it will automatically install using our Product Key, but I have no way of knowing how to do this. I tried searching MS' Knowledge Base, but didn't have much success.

Can anyone point me to a site that will explain how I can create one of these automated setup files for Office? (And if anyone has any idea as to why we're still plagued with this setup error every time someone hot-desks (despite no such Group Policy existing) I'd really appreciate your thoughts!

    Thanks in advance.

    Brian

P.S. We always get at least 4 1919 Errors ('Error Configuring ODBC Data Source' ) whenever we do install it or another component of Office. Any thoughts on that?

I don't know whether a centralized group policy is linked to Windows' concept of "roaming profiles" or whether it is independent. I know a number of people here have experience with roaming, and hopefully you will get some words of wisdom from that angle.

Thanks for the links, but I didn't really find what I wanted. Someone else has informed me that I need to do an Admin Install (setup.exe /a) to a shared Network Folder. I then need to use the Custom Installation Wizard to create an MST file. Then, from Group Policy, I need to point the Policy to that share (using PC instead of User Policy, preferably). I'm going to give that a go with Office 2003. I just wish MS produced better documentation and an easier way to do this!

You'll have to thank SMBP for the links.

By the way, regarding the ODBC error on install, I believe I read that this is caused by the Installer finding more recent versions of ODBC on your computer rather than older versions, but I can't remember the workaround. I know it's here somewhere...

RE: 1919 Error. I did a search on MS' site, and it appears that this can be caused if there is a version of WordPerfect on your PC (conflict, I guess). As we use WordPerfect as our word-processor, this would make sense.

I would have hoped that between Corel and Microsoft, they could have resolved this issue over the years! Apparently not!

I installed a retail (MSDN) version of Office XP Pro SR-1 on a PC that had WordPerfect OEM (whatever Dell is shipping) and had no complaints. It might be that they finally have synchronized the versions, or that Group Policy is more "strict" than the regular installer. As for more cooperation, you must be kidding.

Hmmm. Interesting that you didn't have any problems. I would hope that it has been resolved, but I won't hold my breath.
