Hyperlink to Outlook Item in Excel (Office XP)

I have an Excel spreadsheet that contains, amongst other things, names of people who are in a Contacts folder in Outook. I would like to make it easier to look up the contact information for a person, by being able to click on the Excel cell that contains the contact name, and then have the Outlook contact form for that person open up. In other words, I want to be able to have the cell contain a hyperlink to the contact item. Help in Outlook tells me how to set up hyperlinks to folders, or hyperlinks to contacts in my default contacts folder. But these contacts are all in Public folders, not my private contact folder. is there any way to do what I would like to do? Thanks,

I have found a workaround to my own problem:

    - Open Outlook
    - Create a blank new contact item. I have found that this trick does not work with a blank mail message.
    - In the body text of the new contact, Insert an Item which is a shortcut to the contact you are interested in
    - Select and copy the shortcut to the clipboard
    - In Excel, select the cell where you want to put the shortcut to the contact. Paste. The shortcut will appear as a picture, which you can then optionally format so it moves and/or re-sizes with the cell.

If you double click on any such shortcut in your spreadsheet, and if Outlook is running, the contact item will open up for you to view, edit, or save it. However, if Outlook is not running, such a shortcut cannot open up Outlook.

An alternative approach would be to trigger a VBA macro that extracts information from Outlook, but that might generate security alerts even more irritating than the roundabout procedure you describe. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
