Report margins resetting (2000 and XP)

I have a front end access database with custom reports.
these have there own margin setting to suit paper.

Everything is fine unless the front end is copied to another PC

In this case, the margins on some (not all) of the reports get reset to 24.99 mm

This is really annoying, and it is not just specific pc's or OS's

    So question

    1. has anyone else experienced this feature

    2. If so, is there.
    a. Any reason why happens
    b. Any way to stop it.

I have temporarily got round the problem ,by using the TAG property of the reports to store the default margins required.
I then run a procedure on set up to reset the margins on each to those defined in the Tag properties.

This works fine, but I wonder why it happens in the first place
or is it just another Microsoft product feature.

Usually this happens because the other machine does not have the same printer or the same printer drivers installed. Access does the best it can, but printer information is part of the saved report, so if the printer doesn't match the information, the settings get "standardized".

I guessed this might be the case, by looking at the variables during distribution
    in relation to this problem.
So, as you might guess, my next question is

Is there any way that you know to stop this behavior.
It makes distribution a pain because ideally I want to use
    whatever default printer is connected.

I don't remember this being an issue in Access 97 or prior
It appears to have been introduced in 200 and XP
( I might well be wrong here and am willing to be corrected)

My current solution using tag and a one off reset works fine
but is also a pain if I want to make use of the tag property of reports for anything else.

Maybe it is just another MS oversite.
Starngely it does not appear to effect any other database package other than Access.

    Oh well. here's hoping.

Re: Report margins resetting (2000 and XP)

The printer driver is essential to formatting the report. If you format the report originally for the default printer, rather than for a specific printer, then it should do approximately what you want. There are also issues with vanilla Access 2000 losing its page setup in reports, which was resolved in the service packs for Office. If some machines are running different service packs of Office, the behavior will be out of your control. And FYI, the problem existed in Access 97 as well and doesn't exist in other database products where they don't generate reports in memory at runtime the way Access does.

As for using the tag property, I rarely use the tag property of reports for anything, so I haven't run across that issue. In Access 2002, reports have an OpenArgs property and you can pass values into them from outside, which eliminates some of the need for the Tag. Plus, you can create custom properties of reports and store your values in those instead of the tag.

Re: Report margins resetting (2000 and XP)

I use default printer but it makes no difference.
Tag is ok because the apps are in access 2000, not xp
Also it is a one of exercise rather than each time the report opens as with open args.
It may be the sp issue, but there is no control over which one they have, but advising an update is good.
So I guess a stick with what I have (it works fine).

    Thanks

I've thought of this problem myself, the only way I can think of is to use a PDF driver and then print hard copies from that.
at least the PDF Driver can be a standard add in with your distribution database.

There are a few free drivers floating about the Interenet so as not having to buy the full Adobe swoftware.

The free drivers are generally for personal use. If you want to distribute one with an application, you usually need to purchase a developers license for the PDF generator.
