It wont go away (2000)

I need to delete a database on a shared drive. I need the space to copy the current version. It wont let itself be deleted. The message I get is that is is in use. I have checked. No one is using this. It is not a read only file. The only change that has occurred is that I have a new computer It has Windows XP and - the newest Access. When they moved me to my new computer the set me up with a new logon name. I'm listed as the "Owner" in the profile under my old name. Could this be it?? Trust me - no one else is using this file.
This may not be the right place to ask how to get rid of this thing, but this is where my friends are.

Is there an ldb file in the folder with the database? If so, you'll have to delete that file first. Access XP doesn't necessarily create ldb files in all circumstances the way that 2000 and earlier did, so if you post the exact message you're getting, it would help in figuring out what is wrong.

There are four files in the folder. The database I want to keep. The database that I want to delete, and two Excel files that also will not delete. All three files give the same message.

Cannot delete _____ database: It is being used by another person or program. Close any program that might be using the file and try again.

I was attempting to delete from Windows Explorer, and the only other program (Other than the ongoing Virus Scanner) was my Groupwise Mail program. Checked with the other folks in the area No one is using the files.

That sounds highly unusual. The Excel files shouldn't normally give you that kind of message. Are they linked to the database somehow? You said the files were on a "shared" drive. Is this a network drive? Since you mentioned Groupwise, I assume you're operating over a Novell network, but is the drive a shared drive on your computer or a network drive?

I don't know what to think!!! While waiting for your answer, I found a message on the "XP" lounge that indicated I probably needed the SP1 pack for XP. So I downloaded it, turned everything off including my machine and when I came back went back to check the actual message the Excel files gave before replying. They were deleted with no problem, and so was the database.

All I can say is " What in the World??" and thanks for your response. Obviously I need all the help I can get.

That's why we have multiple boards here in the Lounge. Glad you found an answer and got your problem solved.
