Mac question!!

(Edited by skitterbug on 06-Sep-03 01:13. This was a continuation of a thread I started in Scuttlebutt about my Mac! Ref [post#=291336] if you want to read my ramblings!!)
I am looking for the O/S for the model Performa631CD Macintosh. The version is 7.5.1!! If I can find this as freeware on the net, is it possible to download it to my Windows PC, burn a disk and use it in the Mac? I am thinking that I won't be able to do this but maybe there is conversion software? This Mac does have an external modem to it, but it doesn't seem to have the proper software on it anymore to set up for my ISP connection. It also doesn't have the capability to burn software either so even if I do get it online and download software to it, I won't be able to burn a disk for later use. And having a 283.8MB HD would limit what I can download anyway!! Oh, the things I get myself involved in!! for any suggestions

WOW, 631!!! Isn't that a 68040 box??? OS 7.5 CAN read PC formatted Disks and CD's (I think it was 7.5, might be 7.5.3) BUT,

A> Not too sure if you can boot from it to install the OS
B> Couldn't even guess where to get it anyway.

Sorry, but it would make a fantastic door stop or boat anchor!

    Re: Mac question!!

Believe it or not, it still does work okay but I was hoping to get the software for it since I don't have a way to back it up or anything. I figured since I had the opportunity to see how it worked, I may as well give it a go! What would really be interesting is if I could still get a network card for it and then be able to access it from my Win XP.
(Edited by Bowlie on 08-Sep-03 14:55. Oops - fixed that last link. For some reason couldn't edit a post using my 'mozilla' browser from home)
Hello Skitterbug. I don't think you will find the OS as freeware anywhere on the web, but on the assumption that you do have a working OS you can upgrade it. You can find details of your system at this site . I don't see the 631CD listed but suspect it was the same as the 635CD. The latest supported OS appears to be 8.1. This URL is Apple's FAQ for the Performa 630 series.

Check out this site for OS 'upgrades' for old MAC software. Each download file has a .txt equivalent giving you some detail. I guess that you could move your 7.5.1 up to 7.6.2 using the file called Macintosh/System/Mac_OS_7.6.1_Update/Mac_OS_7.6.1_Update-NetInst.sea.bin (There are four files just above this which are the same thing, but split into four pieces to aid in downloading, before broadband ... ) If you have a slow connection download these four, copy them onto the 'desktop' and double click on the first one. It should then combine the four into one file and do the update. You should be able to find drivers for your external modem here as well.

If you want to go whole hog you can buy 8.1 on eBay for about $20.See this as an example.
Any Mac should be able to read a CD burned on a PC, without any additional tools/drivers etc.

Hope this helps - let me know if it doesn't
