Window opens on boot (Windows XP - all updates)

For about the last two months, every time I boot the computer, a window opens and must be manually closed. The window is: "C:WindowsSystem32." I have searched everywhere I can think of to find why this might be happening - places such as the "Startup" folder. I can find nothing. I cannot think of any relationship to any program that I have installed on the computer. Can anyone out there help?

I appreciate your help and time. Thanks!

    Ron

I would obtain and run Spybot - Search and Destroy => Tools => Startup (that's using the Advanced Mode) for a good view of what starts. It is also useful for getting rid of spy-type software!

Re: Window opens on boot (Windows XP - all updates)

    John,

Thanks for your timely response. I have Spybot S&D and have done what you suggested - never looked there before - anyway, there are 3 files that are displayed when I look where you said - 3 files in the System32 directory - they are:

    ctfmon.exe
    DSentry.exe
    taskswitch.exe

I have no idea that the first file does and when I click on it (in the directory) nothing appears to happen even though it is an exe file.

The second file is supposed to help the computer recognize a DVD when it is inserted.

The third file is from (I believe) one of the Microsoft Toys for task switching (I think when you press Alt-Esc).

Any idea which is the culprit (if any)?

    Thanks!

I don't think any of these programs is problematic -- certainly I have the first two, which are pretty standard on any system... It might be worth looking/searching on the Spyware forums

Explanation of the first one is here:- OFFXP: What Is CTFMON and What Does It Do?
Did you look in the Unicode strings at the end of DSENTRY.EXE for your explanation of its use?
TaskSwitch.exe is probably as you say; I don't have it...

I suspect the problem is that you have "something" in either the All Users profile or your own profile which is causing a folder to start at logon time. I have this on one of my Windows 2000 boxes, where Explorer displays a directory at logon time, but I haven't got round to tracking it down yet!

    John,

I still have not been able to figure out anything on this. Strange things happen with software - often for no apparent reason. This is just one example - another is (for me) that Outlook XP has all of a sudden gotten extremely slow and I clean up stuff and auto-archive - so no obvious reason.

If you have any further thoughts I would appreciate it - and I sure do thank you very much.

Sadly I'm "all thought out" on that one...

Can you run MSCONFIG, look at the startup tab and post a list of everything that is in there.

Yeah, that's an excellent idea. I know we can't search and find it now, but this problem has been discussed several times. There is, somewhere, a MSKB article about the topic but I can't seem to find it again. In any case, the possible solution in the MSKB didn't apply in my case and at least one other that I remember. Your idea, Stuart, is the best place to start. However, it might take some seemingly irrelevant checking and un-checking to find the culprit. In MY case, there was a McAfee program being run at startup that was causing a spurious window to pop open at boot. Un-checking that program in MSCONFIG stopped the window and it turned out the program wasn't necessary anyway. For one other Lounger, I seem to remember that it was something else that was causing the window. One thing for sure, un-checking things in MSCONFIG, Startup should be "non-destructive" and can always be rectified, (I hope!)

I can't find an XP-specific version of this KB article, but would imagine the same applies:

MSKB: 170086 - System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows

That's the one, Leif! I guess I'll never learn how to use that <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> MSKB! I do remember that, in my case, the window was not the System32 folder and I didn't have the registry entry with the single-quote. That's why I said the article didn't help me. I think Stuart suggested the easiest course of action in this case too.

Re: Window opens on boot (Windows XP - all updates)

    Stuart,

I have looked at the startup tab in msconfig and found 3 files that are in the system32 directory - all exe file: dsentry, taskswitch, ctfmon. I unchecked each in turn and rebooted and the problem persisted. I would be glad to send you a listing of all things in the startup tab but the list is extremely long and there is no "copy" mechanism. Do you have a suggestion? I will also check out the MS article referenced in one of the other responses. I guess this is not the worst problem in the world - but it is irritating.

If you know of a way to copy those startup commands, please let me know.

    Thanks.

    Ron

    Leif,

Thanks for your response. I did not find anything specific in the msconfig startup area as per my response to another suggestion on this matter. I will check out that MS article and let you know how that goes.

    Thank you for your response!

Re: Window opens on boot (Windows XP - all updates

Did you check my post above? It's not likely to be something in the System32 directory - it could be anything. You might have to uncheck two or three, reboot and see if the problem persists. If so, do two or three more, etc. When I found the McAfee one, it was purely by accident..... I don't know of a way to "copy" the entries in Startup to a text file, but you may have to do a little cutting and pasting in a screenshot and you could post that as an attachment. Shame XP doesn't let us make that window a larger size.....

Re: Window opens on boot (Windows XP - all updates)

You could try disabling 50% of the things in MSCONFIG and rebooting, then use simple binary division to narrow down till you find the guilty entry.

If you have so many entries in MSCONFIG that you can't write them all down then you very likely have a lot of unnecessary stuff running, wasting resources. You could try opening http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm in a web browser and checking each MSCONFIG entry to see if it is likely to be useful.

Thanks. Please see my reply to StuartR. I found the item in start-up - just don't know what it does.
