    Re: FP 2000 vs. FP 2002 Compatibility (2002 SP2; 2000 4.0.2.3821)

The buttons look like they may be FP 'Hover Buttons' which I believe require FP Server Extensions and thus should be 'published' rather than uploaded using ftp.
Can you check your compatability settings in your FP2002 installation (Tools > Page Options > Compatability) and see if you have selected "Enabled with Microsoft Front Page Server Extensions".

I can't believe the chip speed should affect anything.

What happens if you update a single page to your web using FP2002 - is it just that one page that causes an error or the whole site?

    FP 2000 vs. FP 2002 Compatibility (2002 SP2; 2000 4.0.2.3821)

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Leif on 09-Sep-03 07:03. to make the link live.)</P>This question pertains to the site at http://home.earthlink.net/~rcrrose/R...mers/index.htm

It was created using FP2000. I have FP2002 running on Win XP Home SP1. I copied the entire web from the server to my hard drive. When I open any page that displays the link buttons (those starting with Home and ending with Information), these buttons do not display. If I update the page and ftp it back to the server, they still don't display. Also some of these .htm pages won't open at all: I get System Exception: Access Violation.

I have a second pc running Win XP Home SP1 with a slower chip. I installed FP2000 and copied the entire web to the hard drive. Everything works fine.

What is it about FP2002 that;s causing the problems described above? I realize you may need more information, but I don't know what else to provide. Thanks for the assistance.

Leif is correct about hover buttons requiring FP server extensions.

Allegedly you should be able to use either version of FP with either version of FP server extensions, but you know as well as I how flaky software is! Of course if you haven't got server extensions running...

I'll try this after we get the settings sorted out.

    >Can you check your compatability settings in your FP2002 installation (Tools > Page Options > Compatability) and see if you have selected "Enabled with Microsoft Front Page Server Extensions".

    Yes, it is checked.

    >What happens if you update a single page to your web using FP2002 - is it just that one page that causes an error or the whole site?

Just the one page. I had previously checked with Earthlink tech support and they confirmed that they do not allow FP extensions on my personal web pages.

So this appears to be a FP2000 vs. FP 2002 problem, but it may be something else. Recently, I could not read Publisher 2000 files using Publisher 2002. There was a KB article that indicated I had to uncheck "Enable Office Plug-in" in Norton Anti-Virus 2003. It worked.

You must have just fixed this. It seems to work perfectly right now.

If you check the source it shows:
    <META content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0" name=GENERATOR>
which infers the page was produced / published with FP2000 . . .

My bad. What do you think about how to get a working web site onto a local computer? I've heard it should be opened in FP and then published to the local computer to avoid losing things. This implies that the local computer is itself running a web server that supports FPSE. Is there another reliable way?
