    default slide transition (PowerPoint 2000)

I've inherited a Powerpoint template that has the Cover Right transition embedded in it somehow as the default transition - I want to use Random Bars Vertical. I can change the transition on all the slides in the Sorter, but as soon as I add a new slide it defaults to Cover Right. When I go to the Slide Master, the Slide Show > Slide Transition menu item is greyed out. Any ideas how to change this?

I'm also having another minor problem - how do you add a Title Master to an existing or new presentation when the View > Master > Title Master menu item is greyed out?

    thanks

The second question I can answer: view the slide master, then the first item on the Insert menu becomes New Title Master.

The first one... my presentations default to no transition, so I'm not sure how yours got set up that way.

Re: default slide transition (PowerPoint 2000)

The transition is set up in the Slide Master. Just like new slides inherit their formatting from the Master, they inherit their transitions as well.
However, be aware that now you've edited the existing slide's transition in the sorter view, changing the transition in the Master will not override the transition applied to individual slides. So, as much as possible, you want to change the transitions from the Master, rather than individual slides.

    Clear as mud?

Thanks, my problem is I don't know how to change the transition on the slide master - any ideas? When I view the Slide Master, the Slide Transition option in the Format menu is greyed out - see attached PowerPoint file.

Catherine - You say "The transition is set up in the Slide Master. ". I am unable to set slide transition on the masters. I have always had to do this through Slide Show in the Normal View. Am I missing something here?

I am not sure you can set transitions to slides via the masters. In normal view, when you applied the Random Bars did you apply it to that slide or did you select apply all? I tried it out on your attachment and it worked just fine.

As for the slide transition being defaulted for anything other than none, was this presentation created from a template, used a design template or a blank new presentation? Because if someone created a "blank looking" template with slide transition set, then that could explain the default transition.

You are of course, totally correct. I was confusing my animations and my transitions. I think I need a nap! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Sorry, as I mentioned to Hetty I was confusing my transitions and animations.
It is a difference between using the Apply and Apply to All button in the Slide Transition Dialog. If you use the Apply to all button, you'll change the default transition for the presentation.

    Cheers

Re: default slide transition (PowerPoint 2000)

Thanks all, as you say, I can apply a the Random Bars transition to one or all existing slides in a presentation based on the template sample I sent previously. But when I insert a new slide it has the Cover Right transition and I can't figure out where or how this has been set, or how to change it.

It sounds like I might have to rebuild the template from a blank presentation, which will then have no transition. It would, though, be nice to set a default transition of Random Bars that would apply to new slides inserted by users.

Re: default slide transition (PowerPoint 2000)

If you put your presentation into Slide Sorter view, select the slide(s), and go to Slide Show/Slide Transition, you should be able to set the transition to Random Bars and hit "apply to all." That causes all subsequent slides to have the Random Bars transition here, anyway.

Perhaps you're setting this with the toolbar transition list? If so, try the menu option instead.
