Setting Default Language (Word 2002/XP)

This probably has been brought up before but I couldn't find it in the archives (not surprising seeing how much is there!) so please excuse me.
However, am I the only frustrated UK English speaker (well - Scots, to be truthful ) who gets totally frustrated when everytime I set up English (UK) to be the default language, the next time I open Word or Outlook I get the US spell check?
What am I doing wrong? (I always check "OK" when I get the warning dialogue about this change will effect all Office - it doesn't, or, at least, not permanently .
also I would be interested as to why if I get an email from an American friend, using US English (rightly so) when I click on the "Reply" button I find myself being forced to use US English as well ?

Many thanks, I managed to work my way through what was a good "Step-by-Step" tour of a complex set of actions, but here's the rub - don't bother unless you have a UK Keyboard attached (which is rather difficult to obtain in HK!) or else you'll find yourself typing '" " " instead of " @ "
I didn't know we did it differently - so, I'll blame the English !
I'll just have to stick to the US English and slowly correct their spelling through the "Spell Check"

We use UK English in Office XP by adding it to our regional settings and making it the default input language.....but we set it to use a US keyboard layout and it seems to work OK. See attached file for a screen shot.

Belinda - Thanks, your solution seems to work for me as well.

Much appreciated - IAN
