Showing Smiley Faces depending on condition (2000)

    Hi,
I have a spreadsheet and I'm comparing two columns and if the number is above 0 I want a smiley face and if it's below 0 I want a sad face. I can't figure out how to get the graphics to show. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Deb

You can use indirect with some range names and pics. Here is an example:
The DOWNSIDE is that EVERY cell you want a variable picture has to have the range named and they refer to an INDIRECT function.

    Deb,
If you have the Wingdings font on your machine, you can use that. Your formula for the smiley column would be:
    =if(A1>0,"J",if(A1<0,"L","K"))
then format the cells as Wingdings.
Note: You didn't say what you wanted for 0 so I used the 'neutral' smiley!
    Hope that helps.

Your way is much simpler than mine and a lot less set up.

I got "caught-up" in the "graphic" question and did not think about the simpler "wingdings" font.

    Steve,
    Maybe so, but yours looks much nicer! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Hey thanks Elvis. Much much easier and it works. But thanks to you as well Steve because linking graphics will help me with another project.

Another advantage of mine is that the graphic ranges may be different sizes, so they do NOT have to have the same dimensions (though they all must ultimately be rectangular ranges).

Rory's is limited to "graphics in a font", mine may be any graphic. The range may also include a table from an excel range or just text within the excel range. The "graphic" it uses is actually a "picture of a named range" in the workbook. Any named range may be shown as the "graphic" whether or not it includes an actual graphic/picture. Also this "graphic" is "live" if you reference cells A1:A5 as the range, and you format the cells, edit the cells, etc, it will be reflected in the linked picture.
