    Stopmessenger.com (Windows XP)

    Hello everyone:

Can someone tell me if the www.stopmessenger.com is a valid site. I don't even use messenger, I disable the little man icon. I have two firewalls, so I disabled the Windows XP Firewall; and kept my Norton Firewall enabled.

What am I doing wrong; this message is saying that my IP address is all of the internet.

    Thanks

    Dillon

Sounds like you opened some spam designed to trick you into buying something you don't need. But that's just a guess. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

One last small detail. the little man icon that you disabled is for MSN Messenger, or possibly the older programme called Windows Messenger.

The messenger that this product is talking about is the Messenger Service which is part of the Windows Operating system. This is something completely different with a similar sounding name. It is used to display messages from things like printers. There is a SPAM about where people can activate this remotely to display a message box on your screen with an advert.

So long as your firewall blocks port 135 (most do) you will not have a problem with this service. Another way to completely prevent these messages if they are bothering you is to stop the messenger service (Right click on My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services) then look on the right hand pane for Messenger, Double click it and change Startup Type from Automatic to Disabled.

if you're not comfortable with enabling/disabling the concerned service via start->run->services.msc you can use this _free_ utility from Steve Gibson's site: shootthemessenger
btw, you cannot hide your ip address. this is how the internet works. i you need more anonimity you'll have to use anonymous proxies (of which most are slow and not free) - but i don't have any experience with that.
