    Well Hung (W2000/Win98SE)

Hello. All of a sudden Word has decided not to start. I click on the icon and the Word splash screen appears and then after about 10 seconds my system comes to an absolute dead stop. Not even Ctrl/Alt/Del can elicit a response. Well, not exactly correct. I do get a message that the system is low on resources so I suspect a memory problem. But why can I start up any number of programs, including Publisher, without any problems? The only thing I can do to resolve the situation is to hit reset to reboot. To date I have virus scanned using up to date anti-virus software and scandisk reports no bad sectors. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word and then uninstalled again and run defrag (over 50% free space now so swap file not a problem) and then reinstalled. I suspect that Word is looking for something that it cannot find or is waiting for something to happen. My question is does the Word start-up process get logged anywhere so that I could have a look at what it is doing/wanting? The machine is on a small network and none of the other connected machines exhibit the same behavior. John

I would firstly try to start Word without loading any add-ins to see if you can get in that way. Choose Start > Run and type in winword /a and click the OK button

If this starts Word successfully, then the problem is coming from either Normal.dot or one of your add-ins.

Phil Rabichow once posted a comprehensive list of steps to solve problems such as yours and someone will step in shortly with the link to that masterpiece.

Update. Thanks everyone for your help. I found that starting Word with the /a option solved the problem. However it didn't last forever as towards the end of the day when starting Word the system hung again. Repeating the /a option solved the problem again. Maybe there is a deeply rooted problem in the system that is going to get me in the end!!! I'll post it when it happens! Thanks again and cheers. John

John, the /a only ignores add-ins for the duration of the Word session. Each time you launch Word without /a, you're in your normal configuration. If you follow through with diabling and re-enabling the individual templates, perhaps the source of your problems will become obvious. But no guarantees. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
