It sounds to me like you're opening a template, not a document. Either:
    1. somehow the document got accidentally saved as a template
    2. your default action for documents became "New", rather than open ,or
    3. you have a virus.

When you right click on the document, is "New" in bold? I would first try to save the new "Document1" as a document with the same name & then delete the "original", since it's a template. If this is happening on many documents, then you have problem 2 or 3 above, probably 3. I would check the computer with an up to date virus checker.
    Hope this helps,

Make sure you are displaying file extensions, or debugging weird Windows behavior becomes almost impossible. Depending on your version, try opening Windows Explorer or My Computer, then Tools>Folder Options...>View and set the following:

YES - Show hidden files and folders
NO - Hide extensions for known types

There are lots of other interesting options in there, but if you are hiding file extensions and critical folders, setting the above options should help you navigate through sorting this out.

Thank you for your help. I did run a up to date virus checker and when you right click on any document "New" is bold. How do I reset the default action so that it is "open" instead of "new".

To change the file association default action - Open Windows Explorer and choose Tools > Folder Options and then follow the steps numbered in the attached graphic
