Avery Labels (Word 2000)

    Word 2000 is missing Avery label 5159. I know I can create a custom label with the correct dimensions on my computer, but I also need to provide this label size to the (many) computers in my office. I really don't want to run around to each one - I'd rather copy the 'file' where the label is stored. And that's the problem. I cannot find where Word stores this custom label. I've look in the Normal template, I've even searched the hard drive by modified date, looking for a file that had changed at the same time the custom label was created. No luck.

    Does anyone know if a custom label is stored in a file, and if so, what file?
    Thanks,
    Diana

    On my Office XP / Windows 2000 PC, custom labels are stored in the registry (in a "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0WordC ustom Labels" key). It should be possible to copy registry keys from one PC to another using the registry export and import process, but I've never tried to do so.

    Further to William's reply, yes you can add/change registry settings - below is the content of a file from Symantec which tweaks a couple of registry settings for their antivirus program. Stick the settings into a file with a ".REG" extension and then you can just run that file on each destination machine

REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESymantecNorton AntiVirus NTAuto-ProtectInternalSettings]
    "FileSharing"=dword:00000000
    "DebugLog"=dword:00000000

    I have Office XP on Windows XP Pro, and don't have a Custom Labels key. Perhaps because I haven't created any custom labels?? This data must be somewhere...

    Re: Avery Labels (Word 2000)

    I cannot find the hidden cache of label data, nor do I know whether it can be copied between versions. I went to http://www.avery.com to see what they offer. The blank templates library does not offer a 5159. But they have wizards for Word 97, 2000 and 2002 that operate independently of the blank templates. Not sure whether this is better, worse, or about the same, but each global template adds to the risks of conflicts. Nevertheless, if you want to have a play, the wizard does support label 5159 and can be downloaded here.

    I saved a page of 5159 labels from Word 2002 as a DOT file. I'm not sure if this is compatible with Word 2000, but as it is just a big table, I don't see why not. Maybe this is a good workaround? If not, see the attached graphic which gives the specifications. You could use that to create a custom label and export that setting as described above.

    You must be right about the registry key. Once I deleted my Word custom label the key went walkabout, so I guess it only gets created once a custom label is created. As for 5159, it's only available if I choose the "Laser and ink jet" printer option and the "Avery standard" products option.

    Thank you for the information and the quick response! I was able to find the Custom Label key in the Registry (I never would have looked there!) and import it to another computer! Now, to automate it for the rest of our Word 2000 computers...
