Spam Filtering (Outlook Express 6)

Hi: I have done all the updates to Windows, Outlook Express, am using Spam Cop and I am still getting spam. Now it's starting to be pornographic spam. I have tried using Outlook Express' filtering system (Block sender, and then create a rule stating to delete it from the server), but I am still getting this junk. Anyone else know of a filtering system that won't stop my mail from coming in, but will block the spam? Or does anyone know another method of blocking in Outlook Express. Thanks.

Re: Spam Filtering (Outlook Express 6)

I recently started using SAProxy (http://saproxy.bloomba.com/). The regular ruleset seems to block about 75%; I can't tell if its Bayesian ruleset is turned on or whether I need to train it. I did lower the "threshold" to 4.55 from 5.00 points to declare something as spam. So far, no false positives, so I probably can push it down a bit more.

Because SAProxy trains from Unix-style MBOX folders, you can't just point it at Outlook or Outlook Express files. The easiest workaround I've heard is to import mail from a Microsoft mailer into Mozilla mail, two boxes, one spam and one "ham" (non-spam). Then you can train the filter. But that all will have to wait for the weekend.

For anyone using this program, you can insert your own rules on the Rules tab of the Configure dialog. For reference, consider these:

# How many hits before a mail is considered spam.
# required_hits 5
# I'm getting a lot in the high 4s that I don't like so...
required_hits 4.55

# New Rule I made up 9/6/2003; high score because no real mail has this in the subject!
header SUBJ_HAS_UNAME Subject =~ /bjscherb/i
describe SUBJ_HAS_UNAME Subject: contains jscher
score SUBJ_HAS_UNAME 2.50

Slipstick has links to some spam filtering programs that are not Outlook specific, by the way.

I agree with MJ, Mail washer is a very good program, and easy to use. It is now a sold program from mailwasher's website, but you can still get a free version of it at:
http://www.webattack.com/download/dlmailwasher.shtml Grab a version while you can still get it free.
