    Network Printer Choice (2002)

Does anyone know how to set up a macro ( or VB ) to print a record to a certain network printer? I have a choice of a multitude of printers. I can find the network address but I don't know how to point the macro to the printer I want.

Assuming this is a report and you want to always print it to the same printer, with the report open in Page Setup click on the Page tab and choose "Use Specific Printer" and specify the printer you want to send that report to.

You can do this in VBA, but in most instances it isn't worth the effort. If that is what you really need, someone else will need to answer.

I thought about that solution, the form will be used over the network. Will that choose the specific printer for all users even when they are using other software,? (word processors etc)

It depends on whether the database is split or not. If it is not split, I would assume (others will correct me if I am wrong!) that it will work for all. If it is split, then every instance of the front end will need this specified. Whether you do it in code or by using Use Specific Printer it still works out to the same thing. The difference lies in whether you want to lock that printer down (in which case code seems to me to be the better choice) or you can tolerate people selecting another printer when they go to print.

A lot of these decisions are dependent on who and how many people you have to keep under control. With only a few, you just tell them not to change the printer with lots, you have to account for group IQ (aka the idiot factor) and lock them out of undesirable decisions.

BTW, I notice you used the word 'form' in your last post. One assumes you aren't using forms for printing. Reports are easier to control.

I just noticed I didn't really answer your actual question!

The beauty of Use Specifi Printer is it applies ONLY to a specific report. Other reports (and software) will use default printer settings.

Be careful about that. If the network is a large one, different segments of the network may not have the same printer mappings, and you could wind up creating more problems for yourself. It really makes more sense to use the default printer for reports that may be printed from anywhere on a network. Then each person who prints the report can have a different default printer ... and they'll be able to find their report after it prints. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

What I am trying to accomplish is to have 2-3 people print to 1 specific printer for 1 specific report. They will also be using their own printer(s) for other things. The printer in question is physicaly located some distance from the people that will be printing to it. The report is used to give instructions to an employee.
