    DOS Program (WinXP)

Can I run a DOS program in WinXP? If yes, then how do I do it?

    Re: DOS Program (WinXP)

WinXP does not have true DOS, just Command Promt. Windows 95, 98, and ME had native DOS support, but NT, 2K, and XP were built on a true 32 bit kernel. The NT based versions of Windows can run DOS programs, but they emulate them. Many DOS games will not work properly, but XP improved the support with Sound Blaster emulation.Your best bet would be to set up a dual-boot with DOS on one partition and XP on the other partition. It will be a pain that you will have to re-boot in order to switch between you DOS and windows programs, but it is the only way that I know how.

Thank you for your reply, which I was afraid that it would turn out this way.

As always, "it depends on what you mean by a DOS program". Simple ones will probably work, but nasty gamey ones will probably fail, as CowboyDawg indicates...

As always, again, trying it will resolve the question!

I'm looking at a financial program that does a number of "What If" scenarios, e.g. What if the rate of growth of an investment is "X" %. It's that kind of program.

Potentially that doesn't sound as if it would be a problem. Can you find an XP machine to try it on?

You can safely try to run ANY DOS-based programs on WinXP using Program Compatibility Wizard (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Program Compatibility Wizard).

I'll give it a try as soon as my friend writes it.
