    Can't open file (2002)

I have data on a floppy that I had been using with no problem.
But now when I try to open the floppy all I get is a message
saying 'cannot open or save this file`.
The floppy itself is not bad as I can copy it. In fact I copied it to
D drive, and then to a new floppy. I got the same message with the
new floppy. At the same time, I have no problems opening
files on other floppy disks. It's just this one disk.
What could the reason be that Excel won't recognize this one file?

    Thank you,
    Victor

If you copy the file to your hard disk and open it from there, does it open OK?

I have seen this problem frequently when trying to open XL files on a floppy. It appears to me to be a timing problem within Excel which is frequently exaserbated by anti-virus software that wants to check all files that are opened from a floppy. You might also try turning off your AV software and see if that has an affect.

Let me start with a warning:

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, work on a file from a floppy disk in ANY office application.

Copy the file to the HD, work on it, close it and copy it back.

That being said: could you zip it up and attach the offending file here (pay attention to file size though)?

Last week I copied it to D drive and tried to open it from there,
but it wouldn't open. However, the floppy was still inserted at
the time. I don't know if that made any difference though. Next
week I'll try to open it from D without the floppy. And I will also
turn off Norton as you suggested.

    Thank you for your advice.

I NEVER knew that!! Noboby (N)EVER told me. Thank you very much
for the information. I'm sure it will save me much trouble of this sort
    in the future.

    Very grateful.

You could still try to attach the file...
