IE6.0-Won't connect (IE 6.0.2800.1106)

Running WinME, Cable Modem connected. IE starts up but won't open any pages, balks with a 'Cannot open page' error.
Weird part is that I can browse just fine within my Outlook program as well as using the Avant browser - they both work just fine, but IE seems to have a mind of its own..
Last thing I remember loading onto my system is the OutHol.exe file to re-instate the holidays in Outlook, as well as Sounds.exe for Outlooks novelty sounds..
I've tried going back two days in Restore and that removed the two add-ons but not the problem.
Any ideas?

I don't have WinME, but can you go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/scroll for IE. When you click Add/Remove, there should be an option to repair IE. Run that & see if it clears up the problem. It does make a few changes that I don't like. Below are notes of changes that I do after running a repair if you decide to go this route.

I had to go to Internet Options/Connections/LAN/ & uncheck the proxy checkmark & also uncheck the "perform security test". Must also check Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Automatically detect settings. Must remove IE shortcut from desktop, Quick Launch, & StartMenu/Programs. Must remove Create Shortcut from SendTo menu & Show Desktop from Quick Launch.
Cheers,

Thanks for the reply Phil, but I had already gone the 'repair' route also.. Finally discovered the culprit - my *()^D^()_? firewall. Somewhere along the line 'IT' decided to move my explorer setting to block mode...

Thanks for posting your solution & glad you got it fixed. I'm not sure what you mean by block mode. Are you talking about something on the Options/Security tab or something else?

No Phil, the settings that messed up my IE was in my firewall, I use Outpost (free version) and it has settings that either Fully Trust, Partially Allow, or fully block an application. Somehow, it (outpost) decided to change my IE setting from partially allow to fully block..
The trials and tribulations of running freeware...

Thanks. Now I understand. I had read "IT" has in "IT Dept." Now I see what you mean.
