    USB 2.0 support (XP SP1)

I installed XP on a Gateway laptop and used an SMC 2.0 USB network adapter (SMC2209USB/ETH) and everything worked fine on my home network. When my son took the laptop to college and plugged in at the dorm, he got an error message: "high speed USB device connected to a non-high speed USB hub..." and the CPU pegs at 100% and the machine is unusable. I check MS's knowledge base and it says that the problem is fixed in SP1 but I already installed that. Short of re-installing everything, I can't think of anything else to try.

Has he checked in Control Panel, System, Device Manager,Network Adapters, Should see "SMC EZ Networking Compact 10/100 USB 2.0" right click on it, choose Properties, see if it says " this device working properly". If it has an error and maybe even if it doesn't, you might want to uninstall "remove" it from there and reload the drivers from the Installation CD.

Sounds like he needs to contact the University's Network IT department. It may be a hardware incompatability or it may have something to do with the network setting for their particular network interface. Cowboy's suggestion to check your own hardware first is, of course, the place to start. Once you've determined, as best you can, it's not your system, then get IT involved.
