    Update Directory (XP Pro)

Does anyone know what directory is used when you download a Windows update. I need the exe to deploy out to the rest of the PC's on the network that do not have Internet access.

    Thanks

Downloaded updates usually delete its executable files after installation. To keep updates for redistribution, go to Windowsupdate website (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), on the left pane click "Personalize Windows Update" under "Other Options", on the next screen check "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also" box and click "Save Settings" buton. Then, when Windows Update screen appears again, click "Windows Update Catalog" under "See Also" on the left pane and follow the wizard, making your choises (Your operating system is "Windows XP SP1" or "Windows XP RTM", if you didn't install SP1 yet).

    Re: Update Directory (XP Pro)

I just came across all the .exe files for the latest critical update downloads I grabbed yesterday, per Woody's advice that they were at last "safe", in my Temporary internet folder. I was trying to use Disk Cleanup to dump the detris collected over the last two days and it was taking forever to calculate how much space I would save. Opened the Temporary Internet folder and scrolling through it for cookies I want to keep (like the WOPR cookie) <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> found all 21 of the updates .exe files.

I'd guess that's where they go when you download them. At any rate, I saved them to a folder and will exaimine them tomorrow. No time right now. HTH.

If that's the case, what are all the folders with names like

    C:WINDOWS$NtUninstallKB282010$

?? They are full of files. Are those the defective files that Windows Update replaced, to be restored on an uninstall? Good heavens, I hope not. There's something we wouldn't want hackers creating paths to...

Those are the old files that the update replaced that will be used to UNinstall the update.
