Trouble w/section breaks (Word 2002)

I am having trouble with sections and headers/footers in a word document. I am a new Word 2002 user working in a template that was created in Word 97. The document was also edited by someone else although I do not know what version of Word they used.

I have several section breaks within the document. The first section break will not allow me to change what kind it is, it remains an "odd" page break no matter how many times I delete or try to reformat it. Then, after going into every single header/footer and turning off "Same as Previous" it still will not allow me to selectively delete headers/footers as needed.

I am prepared to copy all of my text into a new document and start over, but I just wondered if any of you experts could give me some better advice.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Trouble w/section breaks (Word 2002)

I don't have Word 2002, but perhaps this aspect hasn't changed since Word 2000. Header/footers are confusing because:
1. The formatting for the section is in the section break FOLLOWING the section, but
2. the type of section break is listed in the break preceding the section.

Try this. Place the cursor in the actual section whose formatting you want to keep. Go to File/Page Setup... In the dialog box that appears, go to the layout tab & clear the "odd" page break. You can do this for one section or for the entire document (or this point forward). If you want to do this for other sections, you can now go to any section & click F4 (repeats the last action). In this case, F4 applies all the formatting choices of the dialog box at once.

On the other hand, if the section breaks are corrupt (& corruption, if it exists, is more likely in the last paragraph mark or in section breaks, then copying text WITHOUT including the section breaks is more likely to fix it.
Hope this helps,

Phil, I tried your experiment and just to show how nutty part of Word is, I changed Odd Page to New Page and clicked OK. The screen display remained the same. Turns out I had to scroll the section break line out of, and then back into sight to get it to update. (This is in Normal View, of course.) Very annoying!!

You bet it's annoying. I've had the same problem with fields sometimes, they only update after I scroll back & forth. However, it's not consistent, so most of the time fields do update.

I am like Phil, don't have 2002 but in Word 2000 under page set up is a tab called layout and on it there is an option for different first page headers and different odd and even headers. One would have thought that all header and footer info would be on the header and footer toolbar or under view/header and footers....but this might be a place to look

Thank you Hetty and Phil for your help. Unfortunately, it would not let me change the type under Page Setup, I had tried that over and over in addition to deleting the break and reinserting it.

I decided to start over in a new document. I'm holding my breath to see what happens next!
