Second HD sloooow (XP Pro sp1)

Just got a new system: Dell Dimension 8300, P4/3.0HT, 800fsb, 1GB ram, 200GB WD2000 drive. Fast! But when I add my WD1200 from my old system, performance deteriorates dramatically. File copying either from drive to drive or to same drive is (rough estimate) ten times slower. I think the WD1200 is the "same" drive, just lower (120GB) capacity. Originally used the Dell ide cable (uses CS). Also tried with another high density cable, and set jumpers to master and slave, with no discernable difference. (Have a DVD on secondary master and DVD+RW/CDRW secondary slave.)
    Any idea what's going on?

Also might try setting up one Drive as Primary Master and the other as Secondary Master. CD-Roms can be setup as Primary and Secondary Slaves.

Both drives are 7200, both are ATA100.
I would reconfigure, but the cables won't permit it; I think I would have to add a controller board (which may be the ultimate solution). But I thought if I put an ATA100 device on the same cable with a CD (ATA33, right?), that it would slow the fast drive down to the slower drive's speed as well.
    Thanks for the suggestions.
    Any more?

    Hi vinnie,
I've had a look through the WD Knowledge Base and from the figures you quote, I assume that both the HDDs are from the Caviar 7200 family? I also think that slaving an ATAPI (CD-ROM, etc) device to a HDD will slow down the HDD, although not necessarily down to the speed of the ATAPI device. It certainly applied in the days of 486s & Pentiums but perhaps it is not significant nowadays? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will give a definitive answer. Back to the drives; here are a few suggestions.
    1) When both drives were on the 80 wire cable, were they both jumpered for cable select?
    2) Was the master on the black end conn and the slave on the grey middle conn?
    3) Have you enabled DMA for both the HDDs? Have a look at WD KB Answer ID 331 for details on this for XP.
    4) Although modern BIOSs should detect drive parameters on an Auto setting, it may be worth checking what the BIOS is actually displaying for the two drives. (WD KB Answer ID 930)
I recommend you have a look at the WD KB page, It has plenty of details. It is here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph.../search_alp.php
If I think of anything else, I'll post back. HTH.
