Weird Page Breaks (Word 2000/2002)

I have a document created in Word 2000 which I did not create. My editing is being done in Word 2002. It has several section breaks in it. The document is a one page document on legal paper. The section breaks are there (I think) to separate parts of the document into columns. Other parts do not need the columns. My problem started when I changed the page layout from legal to letter. When I changed that, the 1st section break on the page changed from continuous break to new page break. So I deleted the new page break and inserted a continuous break. And it inserted a new page break above the one I just changed. I also applied "entire document" option. This documents absolutely insists on the first break in the document being a new page break. And it only happens when I change from legal to letter. As always, thanks in advance for your help !

If you click in the paragraph below the Next Page section break mark (Normal View), can you successfully change it to a Continuous break using the Page Setup dialog? You might have to scroll the screen up and down to refresh the display before being certain whether or not this is going to work.

Yep, did that. And I did use normal view (thanks to a recent hint from Woody). I've decided to retype the dang thing but I just want to figure out this puzzle. Frustrating!

Section breaks have always been confusing in Word. See <post#=293382>post 293382</post#> for a brief explanation of why some of this happens & how to cure it.
Cheers,

Well geeze, do I feel really stupid and embarrassed! but I post this in case it might help someone else. When trying the suggestions posted here, I noticed that when I changed the page layout from letter size to legal size I was only changing the layout in the first section. When I made the change to the entire document the section breaks worked.

Don't feel bad. Been there, done that...more than once.
