    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

Roxio which version? 6.0? What are some of the "so many errors that you get" because knowing what the errors are really can help fix them Jordan. If you can't see a sample of these errors that is representative now, then go to the run box, type in "eventvwr.msc" and lose the quotes, and look in 2/3 categories--forget security look in Application and System manually resize it as big as your screen and scroll to the time when Roxio gave you the errors. Click on it or right click and hit properties and you'll get the error and giving us that will help us help you.

With Roxio, uninstalling and reinstalling often helps and tell us the version. If you give me some errors and error numbers, I can zero in and help, I'll drill Roxio's KB if I have to.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

That's a good logical question but it shouldn't at all. A lot of people have Music Match and Roxio and Nero and several other apps that have overlapping features. Some people just want Music Match because it's not too expensive and they like the organization it has and its ability to help them use MP3's.

How does this work for you-- <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>,but I still want you to get Roxio fixed:

    Exact Audio Copy

I got the idea Roxio was hassling you so much with the errors you wanted to grab another program and you can, but you bought Roxio and it's probably not that hard to fix. You forgot to say what version--it can matter some times that's why I asked. If I have to go search on Roxio's site they ask for the version at their KB. And Event Viewer should definitely to have more specific error info and numbers at the time when you opened Roxio and got the errors so take a look please. It always has when I installed Roxio 6.0 at first and it was giving me errors. If you don't know the time or can't make an error happen, you can open up one of the categories and use View>Find and it'll find an event with the word.

There is plenty of shareware out there to do what you asked about and much much more, and lots of it has been in Software Finds and Wants, and one good resource besides that is to go to Tech TV's site and search and the trick is to search and then when search asks for one month or all time if you didn't get what you wanted, search for all time on the right.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

I have Easy CD creator 5

But if it says unspecified error most times, wont it always say that?
A few times it had an error that I looked up and it said that the quality of the MP3s was too low and that i was able to fix

other than that i got unspecified, i also added up the XP updates awhile back and it had been working fine for quite awhile??

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

Sometimes they give you abundant error info, and too often an overwhelming chain of numbers, and phrases that are not particularly easy to decipher, and other times unfortunately they give you unspecified errors and there's not near as much you can do to search them. The reason I was harping on you to go to event viewer was I was hoping to scrape up some more specific error info there that would give me a hook to search or something I could use to go on Roxio's web site. I'll go over there and see what I can find for ECD 5.0 in terms of your problem and unspecified errors--you might give a look over at Roxio--btw Jordan--I'm on their site now and I notice that they have an update for ECDC 5X, and I don't know if it would help at all or applies to yours. I do know since I have had both Nero 5 and 6X and Roxio 4, 5X, and 6X that they both troubleshoot problems that develop and get reported into them, with frequent updates and plug-ins--Nero sometimes almost monthly, so it pays to hit those sites for your version once in a while to see what they have.

You might take a look at those downloads, and grab one if it applies to your version.

I just went to the Roxio KB and the Search choice it gives me is 6 or ECDC (no version specified) and using that I used the terms "music match" "cannot copy cd" "unknown errors cannot copy" and "unknown errors" and couldn't come up with anything, but I'm linking my search with "unknown errors" to show you they usually invoke very specific error messages so it's pretty inconvenient that they don't give us more to search with.

That's why I wanted you to open Roxio, do what you can do to make the error(s) happen, and then open up event viewer the way I showed you and see if there is anything specific to take to the Roxio KB and search with--or for that matter google groups." I can try google groups for "unspecified errors" and music match and see what it gives me.

Easy creator 5 platinium (Easy creator 5 basic did most of the time) just didn't work with XP. Period. At one point they had a class action lawsuit against them. I don't know if it is still pending

roxio easy cd creator and dvd builder 6 does.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

    Vance43211--

I had Adaptic 4.0 and although there were all kinds of caveats and crashes reported, I was able to play with it and make it work with XP's betas although not all the time. Roxio's official position was always that it wasn't compatible: ECD 4X and Win XP FAQ. I always got the warning when I loaded it that it might make my system crash/or become unstable, but Roxio 6.0 has been making newsgroup threads frequently doing that to XP as well. It did that to me a couple times at first, but I have it behaving now.

Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor reported incorrectly for a time that Roxio 5X was not XP Compatible and even though they are Platinum partners, sometimes communications seem to be difficult between the Santa Clara California company Roxio at 455 El Camino Rio and the 1 Microsoft Way Redmond based company Microsoft with the largest presence outside Redmond in Northern California. See:

Upgrade Advisor Incorrectly Reports Easy CD Creator 5 as Not Compatible (813339)

813339: Upgrade Advisor Incorrectly Reports Easy CD Creator 5 as Not Compatible

There was a bumpy period in there where the Betas were out, but ECD 5 wasn't out, then 5 came out--they caught flack--maybe some of the flack took the form of a suit filed--wonder if the class got certified--don't know will find out status--and Roxio provided patches to make them XP compatible. Perhaps Roxio started moving fast to prevent the class from being certified or gaining any traction with the Court. I used Roxio CD 5 with updates and it worked fine, but I became partial to Nero but use both for fun. I think Nero 6.0 is head and shoulders a winder in DVD and other functionality over Roxio 6.0 but plenty of people might disagree on this.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

I actually knew a couple of people who had platinum and it actually work on their version of XP. They didn't install direct cd which was the main culprit behind platinum not working on XP.

But all version of easy cd creator platinum had problem on XP. Their patches usally made matter worse. I was one the people on their (roxio) forum who would answer question to ' why won't my computer boot up or why do my computer crash every time I burn a cd

You did well to put it in Software finds where people with a lot of experience with different types of software and different rippers can nail it for you Jordan.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

I have been looking, but didn't find any references to problems with the Start Menu Shortcuts in Windows XP Professional after installing programs.

I Know Roxio made the default version of CD Softwate that ships with XP Pro. I bought a CD-RW drive that came with Nero Burning ROM. I couldnt find any way to uninstall the original Roxio program and went ahead and installed the Nero Burning ROM (I think it was V5 or5.5)
It seemed to work at first, but after getting updates (clicking check for updates on help menu), I started having a lot of trouble with the recorder, so I uninstalled the Nero program, went and bought Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator Platinum V6.0 Digital Media Suite and installed it. After the installation and upgrades at Roxio, I kept having problems, so I uninstalled the new Roxio and reinstalled it, After I reinstalled, the shortcut in the start menu is dead. When right clicked, under properties, it shows "This is not a Valid Shortcut.". Also, at the same time, I upgraded my scanner software (the version that came with cannon scanner was ScanSoft OmniPage - the light edition- which I upgraded to OmniPage Pro 12.0) and had the same problem. Is there a way to restore the shortcut menus or the program installer without reinstalling XP. i just now completely deleted these 2 programs from the registry after uninstalling from add/remove programs, and will try to reinstall them (AGAIN), but this seems a bit drastic just to make something work, as these were not cheap programs. These are not the only shortcutss that do not work. System has WD 80GB with over 1.5GB PC2700 DDR RAM Is there any way to fix this? Also: Have Norton Systemworks the XP Restore feature does not work. It did work after install for a while, but i think the Norton Installation killed it. I thought installing another program (OmniPage) might fix the installer (or whatever it is that is caising the problem) but it didnt. I'm not really sure what caused the original problem.it could have been messed up before installing the Roxio Program the first time.

    Any help appreciated.

    Re: Roxio (Windows XP)

I run the latest versions of Roxio and Nero and Omni Page Pro. Both Nero and Roxio can be quirky in a bad way and cause major problems at times, and I've experienced them. I've had Roxio 6.0 cause a number of problems and uninstalled it and reinstalled it and finally it runs smoothly and I'd be specific but I don't remember them it's been a few months since it came out. I've been blue screened so that I couldn't get to Windows without using Safe Mode with a Command Prompt to fix it with the same Nero plug in. Corrupt or conflict maybe--I purposely downloaded it again not really being fond of BSOD's that challenge going to Windows as amusement, and reproduced the problem every time on a production machine because I believed I could recover every time and did.

Roxio 6.0 and other versions have well known uninstall problems. I share your frustration, because these programs are not cheap, and they should be without these hassles by now--Roxio has had access to XP's major code before the launch and I think as long as people buy a particular brand of software in droves they are going to be complacent about high quality--and the more I learn about Microsoft Software and I know and like some very very bright people there but it's a big big company, the more I know this is true of Microsoft.

I don't know of any direct conflicts with Symantec and System Restore, and I use NSW and NIS, but absolutely nothing would surprise me that could happen as a conflict with a Symantec product. Last time I said it a couple people were offended, but I know this even better now having helped on so many Symantec problems that were ID'd as geniunie Symantec conflicts even in their KB. System restore points are often corrupted and 3rd party blamed incorrectly, but new ones are generated all the time and every 24 hours as a default.

    I hope this will help:

START-RUN and entering regedit.exe. After this , Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer add a new key by the name "NoResolveTrack" (without quotes) and sets its value to 1.

    In Pro: (You have Home)

This can be achieved by group policy editor as well. Open group policy editor by opening START-RUN and entering gpedit.msc. Navigate to User ConfigurationAdministrativeTemplatesStart Menu and Taskbar group policy and selecting "Do not use the tracking-based method when resolving shell shortcuts"

Also: Kelly's Tweaks Line 12 Click and Use both right and left sides.
