    Word Saves Normal.dot (2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1))

Every time I close Word, it saves Normal.dot. This has me concerned, because nothing should be changing Normal.dot.

I start Word with the "/n" option to start Word without a document. I close Word, and get the following prompt:

Changes have been made that affect the global template. Do you want to save those changes?

In Tools >> Options >> Save, I have enabled the "Prompt to save Normal template" to catch any changes to Normal.dot.

Why is Word trying to save Normal.dot when nothing is happening?

    Thanks.

Something is happening. It is possible that a global template (do you have any, check Tools>Templates and Add-ins) is making a change that gets saved to Normal.dot. Also, you can set up your styles so that any changes you make get written back to the template. (The latter is a BAD THING.)

Jefferson is right -- something is changing. Your job, find it.

    Hi Bob:
Check through the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. If that doesn't do it, you could have a virus. Run an up-to-date anti virus program.

Now I know why Phil Rabichow is a WMVP. Good call on checking the steps in post 197827. It turned out to be a COM Add-In, which I need, so I will contact the vendor and ask them why they feel they have to update Normal.dot, and explain to them that their software and methodology makes it difficult to track down truly nefarious behavior.

    Thanks to all that replied.
