Word XP - AutoInsert Date of Printing? (XP SP-2)

    Hi,

When a person PRINTS a document, can I get an auto-update field which prints the date of the exact day the document is printed?

If not, what similar / advised options are there?

    m.q.

Where the date would be, insert a print date field code.

I assume that would be the same as the current date? You can add a field code for the current date anywhere in the document, but consider how Word updates fields at print time:
<UL><LI>Header and footer fields updated automatically.
<LI>Body fields not updated automatically unless that option is set on the Print tab of the Options dialog (Tools>Options...>Print)[/list]As the distributor of a document, you have no control over users' field update settings. Therefore, it would be safest to include the field in a header or footer.

    Hi Jefferson:
I don't know if it's changed in Word 2002, but date fields in the body of a document will update even if "update fields" is unchecked under Tools/Options/Print. When you paginate or re-paginate the document (which always happens when you print), the DATE, TIME, PAGE, and PAGEREF fields in the main body of the document are updated. In addition, all fields in the header and footer of the document are updated, including FILLIN and ASK fields. There's an article for Word 2000 at WD2000: Some Fields Are Updated While Other Fields Are Not.

I've always found the behavior strange & confusing. A {filename /p} in the body will only update at print time if you check the options box, but a date field always updates. Someone at Microsoft decided it's more important to know when a document was printed than where it came from. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Phil, you're right. Since I alway keep that box ticked I never noticed the change from Word 97.
