curly quotes characters and RTF (97)

We have a group of 10 project managers here who, as a final step before submitting a Word file for layout, save the file as RTF. Six folks' computers produce RTF files with this representing the curly quotes:
    ldblquote (the left quote)
    rdblquote (the right quote)

Alas, the other four get this instead, and these are coming in as the wrong characters in the layout program:
    '93 (the left quote)
    '94 (the right quote)

What can I do to make the curly quotes all be represented the same way - the first way? I'm baffled about what could be causing this. We're all running Word 97 and Windows 98.

much thanks for any light shed upon this,
    Rachel

Re: curly quotes characters and RTF (97)

    Hi Rachel:
I'm not a font expert but each font has a different set of characters. Alt+0147 is the left quote & Alt+0148 is the right curly quote for most True Type fonts. I don't know if everyone is using the same font or if the same font's are installed on everyone's machine.

As I look at what you've written, it also ocurrs to me that some may be hitting the ' key & not the " key.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi Phil,

It's not a mis-typing issue: the *very same* DOC file saved as RTF on Liz's PC produces the problem characters, but saved as RTF on Susan's computer produces quotes that work perfectly.

The fonts used in our documents are limited to Arial and TImes New Roman.

I'm guessing here but if you open the document disparate machines & click Tools/Options/Compatibility/Font substitution, does anything different pop up? Do both sets of machines have the same compatibility options set? On the Tools/Options/Save tab, do both machines save the document as the same type with the same options checked? I'm sort of hoping that something will pop out to give you a clue.

I would think something in this folder is responsible for the conversion, but nothing pops out at me as the RTF converter:

    C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedTextConv

Perhaps you can find the file name on Microsoft.com and then cross-reference the version numbers on the two computers to see if they are using different verisons of the converter.

Added: There is WKCVQRTF.DLL, which has the peculiar properties:
    <UL>Internal Name Quill RTF Converter
    Original File Name WKWPQRTF.DLL
    Product Name Microsoft

This rings of nightmares of yesteryear, building winhelp files from the botchup job MS made of the RTF format in the 95/97 era. I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but there were numerous RTF "fixes" appeared in this context, and some specifically addressed the curly bracket issue. It's been a long time since I dealt with this issue, but you might get some leads by following appropriate links on this page. I'll try to follow this up further when I get to it... it's got me curious again.

I don't think there is anything to "fix" in the strict sense. In RTF, there are dozens of ways to encode the same character (different code pages, entities).

In HTML, you can force Word to use some specified encoding ("Web options").
You might try if they have an influence on the RTF files, too. But I doubt it.

You're probably right Klaus. As I said, it was just reminiscent of some of the nightmare issues with Winhelp, when MS decided to revamp the RTF used in Word. Best result would be if I'm wrong... again. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
