Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro (XP Home (5.1.2600))

Anyone know how to uninstall Zone Alarm Pro/Zone Alarm Plus without having to go thru laborious process of finding and deleting all the program files and Registy entries manually? The useless "Uninstall Zone Alarm" function does not work. I recently started having problem with ZA Pro 3.0, for no reason it suddenly & unpredictably causes 100% CPU utilization, with the TrueVector service (VSMON.EXE) being at fault. According the MS & ZA site, this is a "known issue" with ZA Pro 3.x & Win 2K, which I assume applies to Win XP as well. Uninstalling did not work. I foolishly decided to "upgrade" to ZA Plus 4.0, hoping maybe the "known issue" had been resolved in the newer version. In fact, I no longer have a problem with 100% CPU utilization. Instead, its my memory usage that suddenly, for no aparent reason, jumps to near 100%, effectively crippling the computer. On one occasion Page File usage was over 1 GB (!). Again VSMON.EXE was at fault in Task Manager.

I'm pretty certain I'm gonna wind up going thru the manual uninstall process (I downloaded some documents from Zone Labs support site that detail the process) but before taking more drastic steps wondered if anyone knows a simpler way to uninstall ZA and get rid of any vestiges of this application from the system. Also any recommendations for an alternative firewall program would be welcome (obviously I will need one if I get rid of ZA). I enabled the built-in XP Internet Connection Firewall but that is very limited protection.

Re: Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro (XP Home (5.1.2600))

Resolved problem - not soon after posting above msg, the system froze up on me again. So decided to try the ZA Uninstall function again, only this time, before running Uninstall, opened Services from Control Panel and disabled the TrueVector service. After the uninstaller verified my "permission to uninstall" (assume you have to be logged in as Administrator) it then appeared to successfully uninstall program. Had to reboot to take effect. So issue resolved for now (I think....)

If there is a "fix" for 100% CPU/memory utilization issue, would be interested to know what it is. As it is now, I am not inclined to reinstall ANY version of ZA on my system under any circumstances.

Still would like to hear any recommendations for alternative to ZA. Not comfortable with the XP ICF's limited protection. Suggestions for anything named "Norton" or "McAfee" not desired. Don't care if it's "free" or not, I don't mind paying for a reliable product that will not freeze up my system like ZA or or slow it down like the two aforementioned products. Black Ice comes to mind, but don't know of any other alternatives.

Re: Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro (XP Home (5.1.2600))

I spoke too soon. ZA seemed to be uninstalled, but apparently is still running as some kind of hidden process. It's not visible, its not in Startup options anywhere, but soon after you've initiated an Internet connection, a page will load informing you that Internet access has been blocked:

Zone Labs: VSMON - Lockup Server
Notice from Zone Labs Internet Security
This page is to notify you that ZoneAlarm has detected a problem
with your installation, and therefore has restricted Internet access
from your machine for your protection.

So it's still lurking around somewhere. The page provides some instructions for restoring Internet access, which do not work - for one thing it says to rename a folder named Internet Logs in Windows directory, however, a file in folder is in use and neither file nor folder can be renamed or deleted.

I guess it's back to the manual approach now. I will never again install this wretched product on any computer I own.

NOTE: It took me more than one attempt to post this msg because the brain-dead Lockup function blocked my Internet access.

    A few references for you:

I've got bored, so will have to leave it to SMBP to fill in the other 127 references!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Have you considered a hardware firewall, perhaps in conjunction with your router/cable modem (if you have one)?

Thanx, I'm sure SMBP would have some further references on this subject.

You might like to have a look though the results from running StartupList, to see where VSMON (or whatever) might be starting from?

Re: Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro (XP Home (5.1.2600))

The problem was, after alleged uninstall, nothing was listed anywhere - not in Startup folder, not in MSCONFIG, not in Registry "Run" keys, or anywhere else. The hidden process did not appear (as far as I could determine) in Windows Services list. But it started up whenever you rebooted. Was able to delete all remaining ZA files not removed by Uninstaller except the Internet Logs folder and a file named VSDATANT.SYS, which was apparently the file that was running in stealth mode. Had to reboot in Safe Mode to finally delete these remaining files using command line commands (first time since installing XP over a year ago that I had to use Safe Mode - even had to look up shortcut key (F8)....)

Downloaded & installed the "free" Kerio Personal Firewall as recommended by Big Al, so far seems to work OK - my system hasn't froze up on me again....

I'm not totally sure if ZA is totally to blame for the 100% CPU utilization problem, tho' in Task Manager VSMON.EXE was the file hogging all the resources. The only software I've installed recently, other than an upgrade to Visual Studio .NET (which I doubt is related to this issue) was the recent batch of Windows Upgrades. It may be possible that these upgrades interact with Zone Alarm in some way (since both may be involved in similar tasks) to cause the excessive CPU utilization & memory usage. I'd been using ZA a long time but only recently had this problem. But that's speculation on my part.

    Mark

I'm really quite surprised by what you say, because obviously "Something" is being started up from "Somewhere" to run VSMON.EXE. It's possible that it was using some of the very obscure locations that the startup process can use, but surely one of Merijn's checkers would have pulled it out!

    Mark,
I found this ...... "Finally solved it, ran complete virus scan and ONE virus was causing all the hassle or so it seems. One of my files was infected with the Nachi virus, musta got through the network somehow when i had the firewall down just after installing" here .

You didn't say if you had run a recent virus scan. Update your definitions and give it a go.

Re: Uninstall Zone Alarm Pro (XP Home (5.1.2600))

Thanx for link, that sure sounds like same problem I had. Downloaded latest updates for AVG anti-virus program & ran complete scan of hard drive. No virus files were found. I "upgraded" to AVG a few months ago when my "free" trial of Norton AV (that came with the computer) expired. It's configured to run a complete test daily at 2 AM. Took a look at test results dating back to when I installed AVG, each test result reads "No viruses were found." So it may be possible that one of the Windows Updates is at fault - in the link you provided, the user with problem mentions that he'd just installed XP SP-1....

I also ran a complete Ad-Aware scan of Registry & hard drive. Some tracking cookies were found (and deleted), but no malicious, scummy spyware programs were found.

So either I have some undetected virus, or one of the XP updates, or ZA, or both, are guilty.... note that after finally eradicating ZA yesterday morning, and installing the Kerio firewall, I've had NO more freeze-ups. The only time the computer stopped functioning was when power was lost intermittently when the stupid hurricane blew thru town last nite....

I checked out the StartupList program, but by that time I'd already gotten rid of ZA. Thanx for link, it is quite thorough all right.... looks like a very useful utility, especially if another problem like this should occur....
