bringing outlook server to dead stop (outlook 2002)

last week i caused our Email server to grind to a halt by sending out some 200+ Emails (which included a word and an excel file approx total 900kb. as an attachment), taking our IT dept some 2 hours to sort out once they realised who was at fauly. i stand the condemmed man for something which had not occured before or for that matter given any thought about.
we learn by our mistakes and now live with a max of 20 such multiple emails per hour. to all our consternation

what can we do to achive a full mail shot which takes place every two months. without causing the above problems

I suppose an upgraded mail server and burning CDs are not going to be options for you. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Are all of the messages for external destinations? If so, considering sending them directly through your ISPs SMTP server. This would take the load off of your mail server to deliver these messages, but might require some configuration changes (e.g., a second profile you only use for this sort of project, firewall policy change if users are not allowed to SMTP through, etc.).
